For the past 22 years, Outdoor Texas Camps has been building Skills, Character and Memories in the Outdoors by introducing and developing Hunting, Shooting, Fishing & Outdoor Skills to 9-17 girls and boys from all over the Country. We host no more than 24 Campers in any one Camp to give each Camper the time and attention needed to not just introduce them to these skills, but ensure that they develop those skills so when they go home they can safely and effectively operate those weapons, bows, rods & reels at the range and in the field. Check out our Camp Brochure at OutdoorTexasCamps.com and give me a call.

“Let them go, let them grow.” We hear it all the time in deer camp, but is it actually good science, or just about chasing bigger racks? The truth is, it’s not just about antlers. Letting young bucks walk creates a healthier deer herd by improving age structure and buck-to-doe ratios. Small bucks are the easiest deer in the woods to kill, including button bucks, and bucks already die at higher rates than does from natural causes. When too many young bucks are removed, you don’t just lose future mature deer, you create an imbalanced buck-to-doe ratio that affects the entire herd.

Here’s the biology. When buck-to-doe ratios are off, not all does get bred during the primary rut window in early November, when 80–90% of breeding should occur within just a few days. Those does cycle again weeks later, and if not breed then they will cycle weeks after that until they are breed. This leads to fawns being born spread out over late spring and summer instead of in a tight window. Since fawns are highly vulnerable to predators for their first six weeks, staggered births mean higher predation and lower recruitment. “Let them go, let them grow” isn’t about restricting hunters, it’s about understanding deer biology. A balanced age structure leads to synchronized breeding, higher fawn survival, healthier herds, and yes, better antlers as a bonus.
