BREAKING: San Antonio Spurs legend Tim Duncan has acquired a minority stake in the franchise and is set to become one of the team’s new owners, per league sources.

Duncan returns to the organization in an ownership role after spending his entire 19-year NBA career in San Antonio, where he won five championships and three Finals MVP awards. The Hall of Famer now begins a new chapter with the only franchise he ever played for — this time as part of the ownership group.

Tim Duncan won five championships and two MVPs and spent nineteen years saying as little as humanly possible.

He was famous for being boring on purpose. No commercials. No drama. Almost no interviews.

Then in September 2017 he sat down and wrote something for the whole world to read.

It wasn't about basketball, and it wasn't about him.

Hurricane Irma had just torn through the U.S. Virgin Islands. Duncan was born and raised in St. Croix. He is one of only four people from those islands to ever play in an NBA game.

And a second Category 5 storm, Hurricane Jose, was already coming.

So he wrote a piece for The Players' Tribune and titled it "Don't Forget About the Islands."

Here's why that title matters, and it's the most Tim Duncan sentence he's ever said:

"Islands like ours tend to get forgotten after storms. We're remote, which makes it hard to deliver supplies quickly, cheaply and adequately."

He wasn't asking people to feel bad. He was making a logistics argument, because he knew exactly how this goes.

He knew because he lived it.

In 1989, Hurricane Hugo hit St. Croix when Tim Duncan was 13 years old.

His memory of that night: a loud boom as the windows blew out of the house. His mother and sister rushing into his bedroom and leading him by the hand. The whole family spending the rest of the night sitting in a small bathroom.

And afterward, his family survived on supplies that strangers shipped to the island. They'd pick up boxes from a neighborhood distribution center.

Dinner was Chef Boyardee and Tang.

Twenty eight years later, a man with five championship rings told PEOPLE he'd been thinking a lot about those cans.

So he donated $250,000 of his own money that same night, immediately, and pledged to match every donation up to a million dollars.

His promise to donors: every dollar goes directly to relief on the ground.

He hit the million dollar goal by Sunday afternoon.

The total climbed past $2.7 million from more than 13,000 individual donors. They collected over 400,000 pounds of aid. Food, generators, medical supplies.

And then Duncan hit the actual problem, which is the part that shows he wasn't just writing a check.

His words: "People have been wonderfully generous. The toughest part right now? Trying to find transport, and getting it down there as soon as possible. It does us no good if it's just sitting there, down on the ground."

So he chartered planes out of San Antonio and got the supplies moving himself.

He assembled a whole team of professionals to run the operation. Their internal name was 21 USVI Hurricane Help. They also went by On the Ground and No Red Tape.

Duncan's favorite name for the group, because he's a lifelong Chicago Bears fan, was The Bad News Bears.

Then two weeks after Irma, Hurricane Maria hit the same islands.

They kept going.

Here's what makes this the story it is.

Tim Duncan spent his entire career refusing to use his platform. He wouldn't do the ads. He wouldn't do the sit-downs. He was mocked for years for being the most boring superstar in sports.

Then the one time he ever really used it, at full volume, in his own words, with his name on top of it, it was to ask strangers to send food to an island most Americans couldn't find on a map.

He remembered what it felt like to open a box somebody else packed.
