Good hygiene is part of being a good training partner.
Before your first BJJ class:
- Wear clean clothes.
- Trim your fingernails and toenails.
- Tie back long hair.
- Avoid strong cologne or perfume.
- Cover small cuts or scrapes.
- Bring water.
BJJ is close-contact training, so cleanliness matters.
Nobody wants to train with someone who smells like they lost a fight with a gym bag.
Come clean, come ready, and come willing to learn.

Do you need a gi for your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class?
Maybe.
Some classes use the traditional gi. Other classes are no-gi, where students wear athletic clothes such as a rash guard, a fitted shirt, shorts, or leggings.
The best answer is simple:
Ask the coach before you show up.
That way, you do not waste money buying gear you may not need yet.
At Team Shark BJJ, adult beginners can ask questions before their first visit so they know what to expect.

Before your first BJJ class, here are a few things to leave at home:
- No jeans.
- No belts.
- No jewelry.
- No watches.
- No clothes with zippers, buttons, or hard pieces.
- No super baggy clothing.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a close-contact martial art, so safety matters. Hard items can scratch, poke, or get caught while training.
The goal is simple: dress in a way that keeps you and your training partner safe.

Trying your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class?
Keep it simple.
Wear clean workout clothes that fit well and let you move. A fitted T-shirt or rash guard with athletic shorts, leggings, or workout pants is a good first-class option.
You do not need to show up looking like a black belt on day one.
Just wear something comfortable, safe, and ready for movement.
