Dear BJJ Revolution Pacific beach Family,

We miss our jiujitsu family and seeing you all on the mats. I hope you have all found ways to stay healthy during this crazy time, and I’m so glad we will be able to reopen and train together again soon.

California’s Phase 3 Reopening Guidelines will allow gyms to reopen shortly. However, we know that BJJ is unlike regular gyms. Social distancing is not as easy with a sport like ours because of the required close personal contact. Safely reopening will take a bit more time than something like a weight-training gym, so we need a bit more of everybody’s patience.

I’ve spoken to BJJ school owners around the world, and consulted with health professionals, and I believe it is not wise for us to reopen at the beginning of Phase 3. Many students have expressed to me that they do not feel comfortable or safe to roll at this moment.

The health and safety of our students and their families are our priority. Our civic and social responsibility towards our community is the reason our academy has been open for 20 years. We will not put your health or our reputation on the line just to rush to reopen. We are doing the right thing in efforts to protect our community.

We are grateful for those that are on the frontline, exposing their lives to save ours! We can’t ignore doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers, police officers, firemen, grocery store clerks’ work! We have many of those critical workers in our gym, and we want to honor them and protect their health. One of BJJ Revolution Team’s East Coast affiliate professors lost his father due to Covid-19. We honor him and will not forget, and we offer all of you our condolences for any of your loved ones impacted or lost to this crazy virus.

I understand other BJJ schools are reopening at the start of Phase 3. Unfortunately, what health professionals ,that are our members , have advised me that there is still a high risk of community transmission from an indoor activity .
We will be closely monitoring their Phase 3 reopening. I hope to be wrong, and to see safe and successful reopenings that we can learn from and model so that our family can get back on our mats quickly. If what we observe is safe, healthy and successful then we hope to reopen within a few weeks. I will keep everyone informed by email.

As you can imagine, between the investment to remodeling and improving our BJJ Family home on Cass Street and the impact of Covid-19, we are in a very tough spot financially. But that cannot be the justification for a premature reopening that puts our community’s health at risk.

Surviving this all would not and will not be possible without all of your support—especially the emotional support that everyone in the BJJ Revolution Team PB family has offered.

Please continue to hang in there, be patient. We are the oldest BJJ academy in San Diego. We will do this right, we will keep everyone safe, and we will come back stronger and more beautiful than ever. Our beautiful new gym will be waiting for you all with open arms and open mats.
