January 2023 Newsletter! We hope that everyone has had a wonderful and restful holiday season! It’s a new year and we’re back for a new season of the Premier Tour and much more.

USA Dodgeball has just released its first monthly newsletter. Check your email, the newsletter provides an overview of what the new board has been working on for 2023 and it includes links for feedback and opportunities to be part of the growing dodgeball community here in the states.

Jess Sexton, Women’s Cloth Co-Captain, is taking center stage with Team USA for the first time this year! She’s been playing since 2015 where she found some recreational leagues in LA and was hooked ever since. After moving to San Diego, she started playing competitively with her teams Fuego and Pride, and was traveling almost every month to keep getting better and furthering her knowledge of the game. Her goal for years has been to one day play for Team USA, and has used her aggressive yet controlled approach to the game to climb the ranks within the scene. She’s thrilled to be joined by other fantastic athletes to advance dodgeball as a sport globally! For Jess, competing in Worlds means that “we are playing at the top of our sport - there is no better feeling than representing your nation.” She’s beyond excited and determined to bring home gold medals for Team USA! Off the court, Jess is a clinical hematology/oncology pharmacist and enjoys spending time with her fiance, Rachael, and their pretty pittie, Leyton. She also loves to homebrew beer (we’re waiting for our batch, hello!!), support women’s sports, cycle & hike around San Diego, play Spikeball, and cook.

Alaina Meeks, Women’s Cloth Co-Captain, takes her first stab at Gold in the World Championships this year! Alaina started her dodgeball career 6 years ago when a friend brought her to an open gym, and she LOVED it! After her first night of playing dodgeball, the league manager asked her to join a women’s team going to the Sin City Shootout in Vegas, and, once there, she discovered a whole community of outgoing, friendly, competitive, q***r-friendly athletes - she was hooked ever since. Meeks says that she’s loved seeing the progress that she’s made over the years going from a free agent on teams in the bottom to now co-captaining a team that consistently performs at the top. While she loved the progress, it’s the family she’s found and created through this sport that holds the biggest place in her heart. When we asked Meeks about what being part of Team USA means to her, she says, “It means being a part of a family that is supportive, inclusive and uplifting. One that I know will always have my back as a q***r woman in sports. One that will always speak up about the injustices of our country. One that will not stand for hate or discrimination and has no tolerance for racism, homophobia, and sexism. One that promotes equality, unity, and love.” Outside of dodgeball, Alaina is an avid rock climber, spikeballer, runner, and all-around doer of anything remotely competitive! Cheer her and the rest of our Team USA players on while they fight for the Gold!

As we near the light at the end of the tunnel (Covid-Captivity), we will soon resume our regularly scheduled Competitive Dodgeball practice on Sundays from 9 am to 1:30 pm at the North Park recreation center.
Please check back as we will post an update as to the exact date of our return to the court.
