This mountain was sooooo long! 16 miles total 🥵

I started feeling some discomfort as we were picking up the pace… I didn’t want to slow down the group because
1. I didn’t want to bring up attention
2. I didn’t want to be the weakest link
3. I didn’t want to ask for help, after all I showed up ready to face this mountain

The problem is how much Calladita Culture™️ quiets us and tells us that we must go through it alone and not ask for help because then we look weak 🙄

Yeah, after some excruciating pain, I slowed down and told the group what was going on with my feet.

Everyone was so generous, someone gave me socks, someone gave me bandaids, someone gave a snack because that’s what she had 😹 and with the support of the group I was able to arrive at the top of the mountain ⛰

I see this happen with women in business all the time.

Because “we are supposed to have it all figured out” we stay small and working really hard… alone 🚶🏾‍♀️

The truth is, you don’t have to.

You absolutely can ask for help and that doesn’t mean you’re weak, in fact, I believe that shows how strong you are because you’re aware of your needs.

If you are feeling tired and burned out, that’s probably a sign that you’re working harder than you need to.

As I finished my presentation, this man at the front of the room said “you’re so spicy” 🤔

It took me 10 seconds to understand his misogynistic racist comment and I responded: “No, I’m fire” and walked off.

If this had played out 5 years ago, I would’ve probably grinned and slowly picked up my stuff as I exited the room in embarrassment.

The effects of Calladita Culture have created a space for men to continue to objectify women.

When it felt uneasy to put up with those comments I knew it was time to disconnect from those beliefs.

Finding my voice has been one of the hardest because of how ingrained those effects were in me.

But there’s a way to discontinue that program.

First, we listen to the messages the body gives, because the body knows better.

Second, we identify experiences that have quieted.

Third, we find safety within so we can act strong.

Dismantling Calladita Culture takes work.

And like the words of once we awaken the dragons, the wolves, and the monsters inside, there’s no going back.

The radical use of our voice has arrived to change the way we operate in this world.

Brenda Lopez is a Certified Family Law Specialist.Ms. Lopez, who is bilingual English-Spanish, earned her B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Chicana/o Studies from San Diego State University and graduated from Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Brenda is the founding partner of Patterson, Lopez, Banuelos, Khiterman, LLP.Ms. Lopez is the Vice President of San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association. She currently serves as a Board of Directors for the San Diego County Bar. Ms. Lopez also serves as Co-Chair of the Community Services Committee of Lawyers Club of San Diego.

Liana LeBaron .lebaron is a native Californian, born and raised in Lemon Grove. She is a product of local schools and is a San Diego State University alumna. Liana holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, and is fluent in English and Spanish.
November of 2020, Liana won her seat on Lemon Grove City Council in her first run for political office. She earned her rank as the top vote getter amongst other Lemon Grove mayoral and council bids and is the second youngest council member to be elected and the first elected Latina.
As the newest city councilmember, Liana continues to gain overwhelming community support by being a representative who brings the community's concerns to the table.

Velma V. Calvario Tlahuancapa, MA. (she/her/hers/ella) is a Nahua Anthropologist and ethnic studies educator. She teaches for the Center for Latin American Studies at San Diego State University (SDSU) and the Chicanx Studies Department at San Diego City College.
Through scholarship and through her own community, Velma’s work seeks to honor, decolonize, and indigenize studies of community efforts to maintain, revitalize, and develop the Nahuatl language and culture. Her research work emphasizes indigenous theorizing and indigenous knowledge as essential to the study of indigenous people, just as they are to their lived experience.

Meet Ana Reyes. Ana is an influential and performance-driven professional with over 20 years of demonstrated success in leadership, networking, and mentorship. Ana is currently at LPL Financial, a company that assists consumers make decisions and offer truly independent financial guidance and investment advice.⁣

As a University Recruiter for technology jobs, Ana provides insights and direction for career paths like Software Developers, Engineers, Machine Learning & Robotics. ⁣
⁣
Ana is part of the leadership team that runs San Diego ERG Consortium and was a founding member for Sony Electronics and LPL Financial’s Hispanic ERG.⁣
⁣
In the Spring of 2018, a non profit organization that skills up women in technology and entrepreneurship was ready to branch out and the San Diego chapter was born. ⁣

is going to be one of our guest speakers and we can’t wait to be delighted by her presence and learn from her journey!

Geena the Latina has been a staple on San Diego’s #1 Hit Music Station Channel 933 for more than 15 years now. Arguably one of the most recognized and beloved radio personalities in San Diego, Geena is the host of “The Geena the Latina and Frankie V Morning Show.”  She was voted “Best Radio Personality” in the San Diego Union Tribune in 2019.  In 2018, she was recognized by California Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher’s 80th district as Woman of the Year.  April 17th, 2018 was named as “Geena the Latina Day” by the city of San Diego.  Geena also appears weekly on Fox 5 San Diego giving viewers a look at what’s happening around town every weekend.  Geena created the annual “Girls Empowerment Conference” which is attended by 500 high school students from underserved communities throughout San Diego.  It has since become the largest conference (non-religious) of its kind in the United States. Geena is currently on the board of the Positive Movement Foundation which aims to provide underserved and at-risk children and youth with the tools and support to increase their likelihood for success as they mature. Geena has accumulated more than 50,000+ followers on social media staking her claim as one of San Diego’s most influential social media “influencers.” 

Geena has been through more than most in her young life, having had two teenage brothers killed due to gang violence, which is why she has such a strong passion for the inner city youth of her community. Geena was the first in her family to graduate from a 4-year university and was also the founding president of the first-ever Latina based sorority Sigma Lambda Gamma at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles where she also received a softball scholarship. She has been a member and has supported a number of charities throughout San Diego.

When one of my clients messaged me about asking for free items from small businesses in exchange for 𝘱𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭 (𝘪𝘵'𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘦𝘥) exposure and mentions from the biggest influencers. ⁣

This exploitative act against our community didn't sit well with me.⁣
⁣
Then asked for my speaking services for free for their performative celebration. ⁣
⁣
I know as a business coach revenues and profits matter, HOWEVER, as an embodied business coach, the humanity of your vendors, clients, and stakeholders matters more.⁣
⁣
I truly believe when you are fully aligned in your core values and have a solid business plan, you can make really good money.⁣
⁣
I believe running a business now is about expansion and growth, instead of the old practices of oppression and greed.⁣
⁣
Collaboration is also key, so Jay from and I got together to create this event on October 22 at in San Diego.⁣
