ecruited volunteers and coaches and started a free community sports program. The sports league led to an adult literacy program, for the over 21 different languages spoken in this neighborhood. The literacy program led to an after-school homework
club; computer literacy classes; and a WIC clinic was set-up within walking distance of the residents and provided immunizations for the mothers and children. Many more programs were launched in this community that spread throughout San Diego County and Friends and Family Community Connection (FFCC) was born. One of Phil's common statements to FFCC's volunteers is "good programs are not enough, we don't stop serving until we get our feet under their table". What this
communicates is that FFCC is about building relationships and the programs are a means to that end. Back to top
Local Impact:
Over the years, FFCC's local outreach has evolved to include caring for the homeless and seniors. Our large community of volunteers are connected by our website and bi-monthly newsletter where we are able to post volunteer opportunities as well as different needs that families and individuals have that we can help with. Our food distribution program, food packaging events and high school clubs provide a way for all of us to be involved. Back to top
Expanding beyond San Diego:
When Hurricane Katrina slammed the south in 2005, FFCC's work moved outside San Diego County. More than a dozen trips to Biloxi, Mississippi over three years with the help of many San Diego volunteers enabled families devastated by the hurricane to move back into newly refurbished homes. More recently FFCC has provided support to families impacted by Hurricane Irene, Hurricane Sandy and the tornado that struck Moore, Oklahoma in May, 2013. FFCC is ready and willing to help with needed resources and volunteer support when disaster strikes. Back to top
Across The Oceans:
In 2007, FFCC took it's first trip overseas. The international work began with distributing 'Fight Against Hunger' meals. Since then we have distributed over nine million meals to places like Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Jamaica, Japan, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Honduras, and more. FFCC focus has also moved beyond just food. We also are working to provide help with water filtration, solarpower, education/technology, medical training and care.
