Q. You make it sound like it is confidence which leads to improved mechanics and technique and not the other way around. While I get this on some level, it seems to me that improved technique can also lead to improved confidence?
A. Of course mechanics and technique can add to confidence, but the physical does not have the power to offset our patterns of mental and emotional conditioning for very long. That’s because we only see outside of us what we are first “firing” through imagination and belief at the level of mind. For example, if we learn and then practice any physical skill with a high degree of unhappy and self-critical emotional chatter, those emotions get etched into the brain as part of the total learning curve. Later, as we repeat the techniques – which were ingrained and energized with negative thoughts and emotions – we may have greater physical talent but a brain that is still firing with sabotaging (tension and resistance producing) energies of perfectionism, criticism, and blame. So while improved technique can certainly lead to improved confidence, it can never replace a confidence that wasn’t already there. We see what matches our current level of confidence and belief, not the other way around.
