Developing Ownership in Young Athletes
One of the biggest challenges I see in youth sports today is that kids aren’t always given the space to think and anticipate for themselves. When we coach every single moment, we unintentionally turn players into robots... reacting only to commands, instead of thinkers who can solve problems on their own.
I’ve watched this play out on the soccer field too many times. Coaches shouting nonstop from the sideline might feel like they’re proving something to parents, that they’re “coaching.” But in reality, it takes away the most important part of development: the athlete learning to process the game for themselves.
At Mesa and with the young players I work with at Warner Athletics, I’ve seen the best growth happen when athletes are encouraged to read the game, take risks, and yes, make mistakes. That’s how they learn. If we punish failure or remove all decision-making, we rob them of the chance to build ownership, resilience, and confidence.
Too often, the emphasis is on short-term wins, like a a perfectly executed drill, a result on a weekend game, instead of the long-term process of developing players who love the sport, think critically, and stay in the game. If kids grow up relying only on coaches to tell them what to do, we shouldn’t be surprised when they burn out early or fail to reach their full potential.
Our job as coaches isn’t to control every move. It’s to create environments where athletes can think, explore, fail, and grow into the type of players, and people, who take ownership of their journey.

⭐️Let’s talk about the critical role that self-talk plays in enhancing on-field performance! Positive self-talk helps players reframe mistakes as learning opportunities, reducing fear of failure and increasing resilience during high-pressure games.⭐️
Various studies involving elite soccer players, highlighting different aspects of the game, have found that… 🧐🧠
⚽️Soccer players who practiced positive self-talk reported a 12–15% increase in self-confidence compared to those who did not (Hatzigeorgiadis et al., 2009).
⚽️Collegiate soccer players trained in positive self-talk made 17% fewer errant passes under pressure than players without psychological skills training (Hatzigeorgiadis et al., 2009).
⚽️Instructional self-talk significantly improved decision-making accuracy by 11% in simulated game scenarios (Theodorakis et al., 2000).
⚽️There was a 22% increase in goal-scoring success amongst semi-professional soccer players in high-pressure shooting tasks when positive self-talk was applied (Hatzigeorgiadis, Zourbanos, & Galanis, 2011).
⚽️Youth soccer players who practiced instructional self-talk during ball mastery drills improved their dribbling control scores by 16% after six weeks compared to a control group (Chroni, Perkos, & Theodorakis, 2007).
⚽️More broadly, positive self-talk has also been linked to faster reaction times in 1v1 situations, reducing hesitation and improving tackle success rates.
⭐️Here at Warner Athletics, we strive to create a positive growth environment, where players develop the confidence to make mistakes and grow from these mistakes to elevate their game to the next level. “Confidence comes from ONE place: what you say to yourself”. ⭐️

✨ Big news at Warner Athletics ✨
We’re celebrating our very own Coach Tia, who has stepped into the role of Lead Premier Coach!
Tia is the heartbeat of our program — not only does she help athletes grow on the field with her energy and positive coaching style, she also shows up for them off the field. Whether it’s cheering from the sidelines at games, or being invited to birthdays and quinceañeras, Tia makes our players feel seen, supported, and valued.
We couldn’t be more proud to have her leading the way for our players and supporting all of us here at Warner Athletics, and we can’t wait to see the impact she continues to make 💙⚽️

⭐️Let’s talk about mental toughness: the secret key to unlocking your potential as an athlete 🔐🧠
Did you know that…🤔:
•Mental toughness contributes to up to 50% of an athlete’s success in high-pressure competitive situations.
•Players with high mental toughness are 60% more likely to maintain consistent performance over a season.
•Across youth athletes, self-confidence accounts for 25–30% of the differences in individual game performance.
• Players with high self-confidence are twice as likely to successfully execute key plays at pivotal moments in high-pressure game situations.
At Warner Athletics, not only do we invest in improving our athletes technical abilities and tactical awareness, but we pour just as much weight into INSPIRING CONFIDENCE in our athletes. 😍
While creating Warner Athletics years ago, founder Melissa Warner’s primary goal was: “to create a training environment where athletes could learn about themselves as more than just athletes, take risks, explore different outcomes and become better humans in addition to soccer players”. After years of growth, that sole purpose has never wavered. ✨
In striving to foster a growth environment, Warner Atheltics’s mission is rooted in pouring into each individual athlete, tailoring each technical and mindset session to the athlete’s personalized needs to enhance development. This perfectly aligns with Coach Melissa’s mission of “wanting to become the coach and mentor that I wish I had as a youth athlete”🫶
Wanting to reach that next level and think it’s time to start investing in the mental side of the game? Have you checked out our ‘Mental Mastermind’ mindset sessions? 🧠

Don’t let anxiety define you.
You are not your anxious thoughts.
You are separate from them. Stronger than them. Always have been.
Anxiety can show up before the game, in the middle of practice, or even while tying your cleats — but you are still in control.
You get to define YOU. Not anxiety.
If this post spoke to you or your athlete, DM us for a free Anxiety Workbook filled with real tools to work through these moments.
We’re here for the mental game, too. Always.
