Project New Village - San Diego Improving fresh food access in Southeastern San Diego is part of a broad-based movement to build social equity, giving way to healthy neighborhoods.

Our goal of improving fresh food access in Southeastern San Diego is part of a broad based movement to build healthy neighborhoods. PNV has embraced urban farming and community engagement as our primary tools to improve food access, food security, and environmental wellness. We use a social determinant of health model which views food equity and self-determination as key factors for achieving better health.

Our Community Rising cohort will be bringing the lights to the Uvas Wellness Garden for our October Wellness event tomorrow night!

Join us this Saturday 10/24 for a free community event from 5-8pm, featuring a healing/grounding circle, presentation by Community Rising, and dinner and refreshments. We do encourage registering in advance, but it’s not required- this event is open to all in the community.

We have some nice looking sweet potatoes on the truck this week, thanks to the work of our volunteers last Saturday who harvested them at the Mt Hope Community Garden. They also did a great job of planting garlic which should be ready to harvest in the spring. Speaking of volunteers, we have another Community Work Day happening this Saturday, 10/24 at the Uvas Wellness Garden (4835 Market St.) from 9-11am where we’ll be planting cabbage and broccoli.
And later this Saturday at the Uvas Wellness Garden, from 5-8pm we’ll be hosting our October Wellness Journey featuring brand new solar lights throughout the space presented by our Community Rising Cohort. Come see the beauty of this space at night and enjoy a healing circle, dinner, and community camaraderie. Hey all, join us this Saturday for two free community events taking place at our Uvas Wellness Garden:

Morning work day from 9-11am, we’ll be planting broccoli and cabbage plus setting up some gopher cages.

In the evening, the Uvas Wellness Garden will be hosting our October Wellness Journey event featuring the Community Rising cohort unveiling their lighting project at the space. Come experience the first lighting of the garden from 5-8pm, featuring a grounding healing circle, a presentation by the Community Rising cohort, and dinner. Nothing like some Latin jazz to usher in the fall season, plus some tasty fall inspired drinks and delicious food for the perfect party. Oh, and did we mention amazing artwork???

We’re very excited to be able to showcase the artwork of some well known artists on the local scene at our upcoming Food Justice Soirée. Come experience the beauty, depth, and surrealism of work by Ami Judah Ami Judah, Jake Wade Art of Jake Wade, Yomer Montejo Harrys Yomer Montejo Harrys, and Brandon Flowers angels guardian angel.

Their artwork will be displayed throughout the garden, plus we’ll have live music, good food and garden cocktails and mocktails. Tomorrow, Saturday 10/17, join us at the Mt Hope Community Garden for sweet potato harvesting, garlic planting, and sugar cane cutting at our monthly Community Work Day. Plus we’ll be preparing for our fall garden celebration, the Food Justice Soirée, happening this Tuesday night.
Community Work Days are open to all, no experience or equipment required. Come be a part of the community, put your hands in some soil and connect with our environment - it’s a great way to start the weekend!
