There's a lot of excitement about the ATF's Oct 9 decision to stop enforcing NFA registration for suppressors, short-barreled ri**es and sh****ns, and AOWs. Before anyone orders a can, read the fine print. This is a federal enforcement policy, not an act of Congress repealing the NFA, and it can be reversed by a future administration. Machine guns and destructive devices are still fully covered.

In California, suppressors and short-barreled ri**es remain illegal under state law. Arizona law only allows these items when held in compliance with federal law, and no court has said whether skipping registration counts, so the safe move is still a voluntary Form 1 or Form 4. Freedom is moving in the right direction, but staying legal is still on you.

Pictures of the Rooftop Koreans from the 1992 LA riots are just as important for what they don’t show as for what they do.

No plate carriers. No armor. No nods. No camo. None of the gear social media influencers claim you must buy to defend yourself when law and order collapse.

If any of those men posted today that what they did was possible without all that stuff, the online rage mob would tear them apart. Yet the Rooftop Koreans are cult heroes — and rightly so.

They proved American self-sufficiency and self-reliance. A clear reminder of the God-given right to defend yourself and possess the tools needed to do it. No nonsense. No cosplay. Just American men doing what American men are meant to do.

During the 2011 Southwest blackout, local police communications were either completely down or seriously disrupted. Police were overwhelmed in my city. Privately, officers admitted they could not keep the neighborhoods safe.

If you had walked down my street that night, you would have seen the men sitting on their front porches, some listening to the news on portable radios (I was one of those), every one of us with a long gun and something cold to drink. I had iced tea. It was a hot evening.

Nobody looted anything, broke into homes, or troubled a single resident.

Gee... I wonder why?

This is the American way of dealing with such things.

It makes me glad I'm not European.

Seeing images and videos of the looting and rioting in France and the helplessness on the faces of looting victims brought back memories of signs like this one during the Cedar and Laguna fires in San Diego County. Signs like this were common during those times, as they should be. Looting was not common. I wonder why?
