One unforgettable night in San Diego

06/03/2026

Competition day is about more than medals.

It's about the little moments that happen along the way.
A younger dancer watching an older one perform and thinking, "Maybe I can do that too."
A friend offering encouragement before it's their turn.
A mentor helping someone feel brave enough to step onto the stage.
The confidence we see on competition day doesn't appear overnight.
It grows through friendship.
Through challenge.
Through belonging.
Through having people who believe in you.
That's one of the things we love most about Highland Dance.
The medals are wonderful.
But the friendships, leadership, courage, and confidence our dancers develop will last much longer.

What if your child found an activity that actually challenged them?

Not another activity where everyone gets the same participation ribbon.

Not another activity where they disappear into a crowd of 30 kids.

A place where they are known.

Where older children encourage younger children.

Where friendships form naturally.

Where confidence comes from learning something difficult and discovering, “I can do this.”

One of my favorite moments this weekend wasn’t on stage.

It was watching older dancers help younger dancers, cheer for them, and celebrate their successes as if they were their own.

That’s the kind of environment we’re building.

This June we’re opening a small 4-week Confidence Camp in Rancho Bernardo for children ages 4+ who are ready to try something new.

No dance experience needed.

If you’d like to see whether your child might enjoy it, I’ve created a quick 2-minute questionnaire:

Confidence isn’t just something we talk about — it’s something we build, together.
At SDHDA, Confidence Camp was created to help children grow through encouragement, structure, challenge, and belonging in an environment designed to support them every step of the way.

More than dance, we hope to give children:
✨ Confidence that grows
✨ Friendships that last
✨ Leadership opportunities
✨ A place to belong

Because the strongest confidence is the kind they build for themselves.

I've spent more than 30 years teaching Highland dance — and I've learned something that most activities get wrong:

Children don't build real confidence from being told they're amazing.

They build it from doing hard things in environments that support them through the struggle and celebrate what they earn.

That's why I created Confidence Camp.

This isn't a drop-in class or babysitting in dance shoes.

It's a small, intentional experience for children who are ready to be challenged — and families who are ready to support them as they grow.

Because we keep the program small and personal, we take a moment before each intake to make sure every child is set up to thrive.

That starts with a short questionnaire.

If your child responds well to encouragement, structure, and meaningful challenge, take 2 minutes to see if Confidence Camp may be the right fit:

Looking for 4-5 families interested in a more structured dance program focused on building confidence and discipline.

This is not a drop-in or recreational class—it’s a small, intentional group starting with a 4-week Confidence Camp.

Happy to share details if it sounds like a fit.

Some of the most important moments don't happen on stage.

They happen right here — when an older dancer stops to help a younger one try something new.

Encouraging her. Steadying her. Celebrating when she gets it.

That's not just kindness. That's leadership — and it's something our dancers build over time.

Confidence Camp is where every SDHDA journey begins.

If this feels like the right environment for your child, I'd love to connect.

Confidence Camp is a 4-week introduction to Highland dance designed to help children build confidence, focus, and discipline in a supportive, structured environment.
It’s open to any child who would like to try. Progression beyond Camp is by invitation, based on readiness—not talent.

Spooky season was in full swing last week! 🎃💙 We had so much fun celebrating Halloween in class — the costumes, the smiles, and of course, the dancing!
