A group of topless women equipped with milking machines conducted a provocative performance art piece at The National Gallery on Friday 10th May, 2024 titled ‘Milk is NOT Human(e)’. This demonstration was organized by artist Stephanie Lane of SPECIESISM.WTF as part of the gallery's 200th Anniversary Celebration, stirring considerable attention and debate. The display, aimed to critique the representation of nonhuman animals in the gallery's collections, was widely covered by photographers and viewed by numerous attendees.

Stephanie Lane criticizes The National Gallery for not being inclusive of all sentient beings, particularly nonhuman females, suggesting that the gallery predominantly portrays nonhuman animals as commodities, thereby perpetuating animal cruelty and speciesism. This, according to Lane, fails to reflect the modern cultural views and shifting perspectives towards speciesism and the ethical treatment of animals.
