Love doing parachute in my classes. So much fun and so many skills enhanced.

Benefits of parachute play and why you should include a parachute in your classes:

- Strengthens Fine Motor Skills and our grasp reflexes
- Encourages Cooperation and teamwork
- Strengthens the Upper Torso
- Non-Competitive
- It encourages participation regardless of skill level
- Refines Perceptual Skills
- Reinforces Turn Taking/Sharing
- Develops a Sense of Rhythm/Tempo
- Requires Following Directions
- Promotes Social Interaction
- Enhances Language Development

Dance Concepts we learn with a parachute:
SPACE
LOCOMOTION/NON-LOCOMOTION
TEMPO
LEVELS
SIZES
POSITIONS (On, Off, Over, Under etc)

For extra fun- throw fun, lightweight props inside to practice throwing and catching. In this picture we have some:
☀️ Sunshines
🌈 Rainbow Wands
🌸 Foam Flowers

Very informative about “W” sitting.

What is “W” sitting and how can it derail a child’s development?

The dancer on the right is sitting in a “W” position. Rather than using her core muscles to sit up right, she is propping her knees forwards and using them like a kick stand. This is a very natural and easy position for young children, however, it is harmful in many ways.

#1 - Prohibits core strength development. The child is using their legs to prop themselves up rather than their core. Lack of a developed core can cause further delays to a child’s gross and fine motor development.

#2 -Sitting this way for long periods of time could cause damage to internal hip rotators.

#3 Hip Dysplasia. A complete dislocation of the hips could occur after prolonged “W” sitting.

#4 Orthopedic Issues. This position could cause tightness in other muscles which could affect overall ease of movement.

#5 - Bilateral/Coordination issues. Sitting this way can limit trunk mobility. This means if an object is to the left of the body, the child can only use their left hand to pick up the object, affecting hand dominance (if a child is right or left handed).

As dance teachers, we should be aware of “W” sitting and teach our dancers how to sit comfortably in other positions.

If you notice “W” sitting during stretches, try this:
Let’s all put our toes straight in front of us! Say “Hello toes!” (Flex) “Goodbye Toes!” Pointe. Next open one leg slightly and have dancers tap that leg and say “Hello Leg!” Repeat with the other leg. Dancers should be in a “V” position. I describe it as a piece of pizza similar to pizza feet. Repeat the hello toes and good bye toes. I tell my dancers we should always see our toes when we are stretching.

If you notice a dancer “W” sitting during different parts of class such as waiting turns, some other seated positions are:
- Criss Cross Applesauce
- Tailor Sitting (Both feet in front with legs bent) to encourage this position I have dancers give knees a hug and kiss both knees.
Mermaid Sitting - Both knees bent to one side
- Sitting with straight legs (like the child on the left)

This should also be practiced with parents at home, not only in the studio 💖
