History: Formal BJJ in Yuma started in May of 2005 under Fabio Santos BJJ Academy with Jared (Yuma Jiu-Jitsu) instructing at Americana Fitness, then located in the Crescent Center.
In September of 2006 we moved to a space on Catalina and formally became Yuma Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. We continued there through February of 2015 when Jared moved to California. We moved over to 3rd Avenue under Mike (Michael El Gato Garcia) and became Yuma Family BJJ. We trained there through the summer of 2017 when we moved to our current location.
When Mike and his family moved to Washington in the spring of 2018, we formally rebranded as Ascent Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The name changed, team members came and went over the years, but we have always remained one family, one school, one team, and one lineage under Fabio Santos.
Thank you to everyone, students and instructors, who have come and gone and contributed to the rich history and legacy of our school and lineage. Much respect to the now several other BJJ schools in Yuma and those who train there. May we all enjoy many more years of healthy training.

Samuel Marquez with the choke. Awesome performance this Saturday at Jiu Jitsu World League. Pay close attention to how simple his cross collar choke set up is, you don't really notice his first hand go in.
What an amazing example of fundamentals never failing. This young man has been training for his entire life and his fundamentals are solid. You can catch him leading our fundamentals class Tuesdays and Thursdays sometimes and working our upper belts in our advanced classes afterwards.
Come train with him in San Diego when you have a chance.
