How to Trade and Fight Aggressively- Muay Maat & Dutch Kickboxing Styles 08/08/2022

How to Trade and Fight Aggressively- Muay Maat & Dutch Kickboxing Styles

In this Class, we practice a high pressure style of fighting, which I call aggressive or power style. This can be used in kickboxing or Muay Thai fights and is beautiful when executed right. This style is only one option, and is not suitable for everyone, every time, but is extremely useful to have in your style kit. In this video I also explain WHEN it's beneficial to use this style (15:00).

If you don't hold pads correctly you can ruin your partner's technique. That's why when I worked in big gyms I wouldn't let anyone do pads in my classes because I knew it's making them worse. You have to protect your technique. Your skills are either getting better or worse, never staying the same. If your partner holds with bad angles, you are training to get better at bad angles and probably distorting techniques to get there. You need a minimum standard of pad holding to get better from it.

In this class, I go over pad holding basics. The full video is in the link in Bio.

Muay Thai Heavy Bag Combos 10/02/2021

Muay Thai Heavy Bag Combos

In this class we work specific combos on the bag, and a do some of teep drills. Intermediate level, but anyone can practice these. We slow things down and focus on movement patterns. These combos aren't chosen because they're great in of themselves. I randomly pick a combo- the point is movement, transition, balance and accuracy. Any combo will do, just practice the principles mentioned. The teep drills are great though, they really hone in on your control. Hope you get some ideas!

When you spar, focus most of your energy on making sure your stance is solid and your balance and accuracy are on point. Think of it as dividing your awareness into each area.Ā Ā

For example: if you feel sloppy, revert back to stance. Focus your awareness to 75% stance and balance and 25% the rest. Once you are moving good, not crossing your legs, feel balanced, then move onto defense. Start catching shots. Your goal would be to block some kicks, while remaining balanced, while going back into good stance. Combine good defense, while remaining balanced.Ā Ā

Once you feel confident you’ve improved those things in that round, now try add some more offense. Start with single shots. Only a jab or a right kick. And work from there. When you find yourself losing balance, or you are missing shots, or feel overwhelmed, overthinkingĀ etc- Revert back. Go back to defense and so on.Ā

This makes a huge difference inĀ yourĀ performance. Be deliberate in what you work on and in what order.Ā Ā

09/24/2021

This is a variation of the roundhouse kick. Instead of fully rotating like a traditional Thai kick, you kick more straight up, and then pull back into a blocking defensive position as Melissa does after her kick.

When to use this: if your opponent has an open guard where his elbows are flared... You can kick in between his elbow and body, aiming at armpit.

Also you can use this kick when you want to be faster, to beat your opponent to the punch. It has less power than fully rotating your hips though- that's the drawback.

Also use when you want to be safer as this kick is shorter and you can go back into a defense quicker than committing to a full Thai kick.

In other words when you rock your opponent, or have more of a guaranteed shot - use traditional Thai kick and fully commit, rotate and follow through. Not so sure or feel a bit defensive? Use the kick in this video.

I elaborate more in my next video posting Monday. Too see go to 8 Tribe Muay Thai on YouTube.

Sparring Tip- Defense first. When you feel sloppy, off balance or getting caught with shot, simplify and put your energy is defense. Then, once you can catch a few of your partners shots, then start more offense. This will reset your bad performance and calibrate you to do way better.

If you’re on the fence about going today, here’s why you should go!

Imagine you stay home, you know you should be there, you agree that these lockdowns are wrong, but decide to stay safe and avoid the risk of getting 2k fine. Besides, a lot can go wrong and nothing will probably change anyway. After the protest, you feel guilty and a small part of your soul will be dead. You’ll be more pessimistic, feel weaker, think weaker- because you ARE weaker- you let fear win again! Slowly slowly you will erode and have no strength. Next time you will be even weaker. That alone, you should make you go.

If you go- you will get charged up, inspired, energized, feel purpose and be around like minded people. Whatever happens, your perspective will change, you will know more, you’re more experienced now. You will be empowered, you had the balls to go knowing the majority of people stayed home ā€œsafeā€. This proves to you your strength. It builds character and confidence, something worth a lot more than the $2,000 fine. Your thoughts and actions will inevitably change, taking you on a different path. A more empowered path. Your self-respect will soar. You stay home- you will know you are weak, it will eat at you. Most will ignore and rationalize and talk themselves out of it to divert attention from the fact it is purely because of FEAR that you didn’t go.Ā

So… think of the big picture. Think locally… just by being there your heart will grow, your strength validated, charged up full of energy. Staying home means giving up- on life, your family, friends and yourself. How can you be happy, hopeful, optimistic by staying home? Be the change you want to see in the world. Get your ass up TODAY and support the people on the right side of history. This is an opportunity that if you miss now, you will go down mentally, spiritually… and if you decide to face your fear in a few hours, you will be rewarded in ways you didn’t expect. You know the answer, listen to what your inner strength is telling you.Ā

Power and endurance are just as essential for Muay Thai as technique. You can be the most skilled fighter but if you gas out, or throw fairy punches, you will l get smashed by a lesser opponent.
Ā
Getting fit and strong is the easy part. It’s straight forward, not hard to do at all. If your training is quality, efficient and consistent, you can just set it on auto pilot and do. Learning how to fight is a lot harder.
Ā
When it comes to Muay Thai conditioning, you got to mimic the fight durations, and train to max out in those times. A circuit should have a combination of strength (resistance), high intensity cardio, plyometrics, and incorporate Muay Thai moves. And always, add some exercises to counteract the imbalances you get from all the training.
Ā
But I do all this for you- tonight! In case you didn’t know, my workouts are well thought out. I don’t just wing it (even though it might look like it). I don’t add fillers, or any bu****it exercises just to fill time and wreck you. If I give you something, it’s for a reason, and fits into the big picture of the session, and even the week. The only thing I can multitask in my life is training.
Ā
Wednesday is conditioning night. Less thinking, more smashing and feeling amazing. See you all there!

It's easier to train 5 days a week than twice a week. When you train daily, momentum propels you- it's actually harder NOT to train when you got momentum... When you're doing 1-2 days a week it's more of a battle... but not a big deal.

Moral of the story- get your ass in the gym tonight! We are doing pads at 5pm. Yallah!

Muay Thai is exemplified by the WARRIOR archetype.
Ā
Full contact sports appeal to a special breed of people. It’s an arena where they prove themselves a warrior, outside the battlefield. To fight is to realize your potential, to develop empowering character traits, and to know yourself better.
Ā
Most people can’t articulate why they are attracted to Muay Thai. I know because I’ve asked hundreds of people. I know why guys are in my class even if they don’t. I’ve spent a long time thinking what it is about fighting that is irresistible to our kind, and what draws us in to do this seemingly irrational and dangerous sport. It’s primal, it’s in all of us to fight.
Ā
Here’s a thought experiment for the lovers out there, the ones who say "I’m a lover not a fighter". If an enemy is about to r**e your wife, kill your kids, shoot your parents in front of you, are you capable of atrocity? Oh course you are. I think we all have a ā€˜WARā€ gene, but for most it has never been activated, it lays dormant.
Ā
Having said that, not everyone has the WARRIOR archetype. This is an actual role, a priority we must act out and live in our life. Just like some people don’t like to read books and instead use their hands, to learn through practical application, some people are more inclined to have the Warrior spirit and learn and realize through fighting. The WARRIOR has a need to be proven, to walk through fear and come out alive and stronger. It’s a way to realize our potential and our purpose and gain fulfillment do it.
Ā
Being a warrior to me is not just about smashing people in the ring (although that’s fun too 😊). Being a warrior is speaking up when everyone is silent. Being a warrior is protecting those weaker and more vulnerable. The Warrior needs a just fight, just as a just fight need the Warrior, in or outside the ring. We act out and play this role in life, and it fullfills us when we do. Not through anger but a fight for purpose, a fight to make the world a better place.
Ā
Times like today, we need the Warriors to come forth! šŸ”„

Karate was my first martial art at 8 years old. Then Taekwondo. I liked the kicks and sparring but not katas. Too much fluff for me.

At 16 I tried kickboxing. Much better. More contact, more practical.

Then Boxing at 18. Loved head movement, footwork but missed using my kicks.

I did my first trip to Thailand in 2001 at 20 years old and discovered Muay Thai. Way superior- exactly what I was looking for. Practical, tough, realistic, no fluff.
