Hi parents and students,

We have a few adjustments to our June schedule:

We will no longer have a junior class at 4:00-4:50 on Wednesday and Friday. We will still have a class at 5:00-5:50.

The junior class for today (6/5) and Friday (6/7) will be held at the Rancho Bernardo Community Center rather than Carmel Mountain. (5:00-5:50).

The adult class on next Wednesday (6/12) will be held at the Rancho Bernardo Community Center, 6:30-7:50. This is tentative because we have not received formal confirmation from the Center director.

The adult hojo undo class is scheduled for Saturday June 29th, 1:00-3:00, at the Ed Brown Senior Center.

I hope to see everyone training this summer, along with some familiar faces.

What a sheltered life I have been blessed with.
For my first 57 years, Memorial Day was a special day marking a 3 day weekend, celebrating the forthcoming summertime: to a child, school would soon be out, it was the opening weekend for our local swim club/pool and weather was warming with the splendor of the Michigan summer about to bloom.

Moving to California, this celebration continued with Sensei Higaonna holding an annual 3 day training event. I was able to test for my first and second black belt on memorial weekend. The celebration continued.

Then, in 2017 I heard of 7 sailors losing their lives when their ship (the USS Fitzgerald) collided with a cargo ship off the coast of Japan. Days later the 7 sailors names were released. Sadly, I recognized the name Shingo Douglass. I was thinking that the Shingo that I knew couldn’t be old enough to be enlisted, so with fingers crossed I mistakenly hoped it wasn’t the Shingo that I knew—for the passage of time gets harder to keep track of as we get older.

My mind floods with sadness and recollections of our past friendship.

Shingo and his younger brother, Sho, began training at my karate dojo when Shingo was about 9. He was always happy and enthusiastic. It is such a blessing for parents to entrust me in teaching their children. I get to watch them play, interact as they grow and flourish. Shingo’s mother was Japanese/Okinawan and his father was an American marine. His family was a significant asset to the dojo. His parents reflected the respect that I work to instill in the students. It was always a happy class when Shingo and Sho were present. Shingo and Sho trained with me for more than 4 years while Shingo achieved his junior black belt. This reflected his dedication.

Words seem empty in reflecting how much someone means to you. A simple paragraph can not do justice to the richness of his full life.

Now when I awaken on Memorial Day, I carefully reflect on the Shingo I loved. I realized that in my sheltered life I have never known a veteran lost in action. I weep for Shingo, along with all the veterans that lost their comrades and best friends. I would console all sisters and brothers that have lost a sibling. Most painful, I stand with parents that have lost a child.

I think of portrayals of heroes that have saved hundreds in battle, multitudes of civilians, and dying with the dignity of their bravery and with the honor they have lived by.

Shingo lived his life with utmost honor, dignity and compassion, naturally spreading the love of a true human being.

Shingo you are forever my hero!

Good afternoon students and parents,

The hojo undo class is scheduled for tomorrow (5/18) from 1:30-3:30. This will be held at the Ed Brown senior center.

We had to advance the time 1/2 hour because the senior center is in use until 1:00. This will allow the previous group time to vacate.

I hope to see everyone training.

The correct info for ordering shureido GIs prior to traveling to the Budosai this summer. I am not sure why they say the location change as it looks the same on google maps. EDIT
See Sensei Lambert's comment below
The new one is only half a block down from the former location

Did you know that the Shureido shop is also not in the same location as the last Budosai. We've included their new location in the comments sections.

BUDOSAI TOURISM
(Google map link in the comments)
The Okinawa Peace Park and Peace Hall are two very moving places that everyone should experience. Okinawa was the scene of the one of the most devastating battles of WWII and some many locals were caught in the crossfire. Along with being a memorial to those who had their lives cut short due to the fighting, this special site is a reminder to the world that despite our differences, peace should always prevail. Walking through the peace park, you may be able to find the name of Shinzato Jin'an Sensei on one of the large stone tablets if you look close enough. Something everyone should see.

Hi parents and students,

I wanted to let you know the adjustments that we have had to make for our February schedule:

The adult classes will remain at the Carmel Mountain Center (6:30-7:50).

On each Wednesday through March we will only have one junior class at 4:00-4:50. We will not be having the 5:00 class.

Next Wednesday (2/14) we will not be having the adult class at 6:30.
