[01/25/21]   BE LIKE IKA: LEE, JOHNSON BUST OTAY FIELD
It was all there Saturday, January 23--a strong 37-boat field, nagging and occasionally heavy rain and even a premonition to catching the tournament kicker. Put it all together and you got a 17.19-pound winning bag for Stuart Lee and Nolan Johnson, and a nice payday, $2400 for the win and $500 for their 6.38-pound kicker.
“Basically, we fished one spot with rocks,” said Lee, describing a depth range of as shallow as seven feet and as deep as 25 to 30. “We got most of our fish and most of our weight early, in the first three hours,” he explained.
Their productive methods included the drop-shot, Senkos and the Ika. According to Lee, it was Johnson who called the big bass shot. “Right before I got it my partner said, ‘I feel like a 5-pounder is coming’ and it did.” It came on an Ika.
Humbly, Lee added, “We got a little lucky. We had a good early draw and got to our spot. Things just worked out.”
No strangers to the top end of the leaderboard, Kevin Norling and Dan Hermes took second place, mustering 15.89 pounds on the day, good for $1500. Their bag included the third largest bass of the contest, a 3.96-pounder, good for another $100 in cash. Plus stimulus $300
Noted Norling, “We caught our bigger fish on drop-shot and the rest on jerk baits and Chatter baits. I would say 10 to 15 feet was best,” adding, “I think the weather really played a big factor in the event.”
The third-place team of Greg Miser and John Weber brought in 15.15 pounds, including the second big bass of the contest weighing 3.98 pounds. Their bag was good for $1000, while their big bass earned them a $250 Abu Garcia rod and reel.
Miser noted that most of their limit came on reaction baits, including their biggest, while the other fish came while flipping.
With 33 of the 37 teams catching limits, it was a remarkable January catch. Also unusual was a new cash prize offered to El Cajon Ford contestants: $600 in “stimulus money. Two Teams are drawn from the field and each receives a check for $300. The fisherman stimulus fund will be at each of the remaining events for the season. The two-team drawn by Stuart Lee was Kevin Norling/ Dan Hermes and Lyle Hunter / Aaron Morrison
The next opportunity to win will be March 13 when the Day Series moves to El Capitan.

[01/14/21]   Anglers,
The second tournament of the 2021 season on February 13, 2021 at Lake San Vicente has been cancel due to conflicts with other organizations. San Diego Teams Series goal is to provide the best tournament circuit without any conflict or forcing the fisherman to decide with whom or where to fish. We want to make your tournament experience a fun and enjoyable adventure. I hope all concerned understand my decision.
My staff and I are looking forward to seeing all of you at our first tournament on January 23, 2021 at Lake Otay.
This now leaves us with a five-tournament season. We will not enforce the 5 of 6 event rule to qualify for the TOC. We also will take 50 % of the teams according to the final standings to the TOC with the top ten teams entry comped for the TOC.
Our payback of 1 in 4 teams at each tournament with the last team receiving back their entry fee for that event has not changed. Our entry fee covers all option and permits, insurance and TOC fund. We still will give Byron’s 1st out of the money of $200 to the team first out of the money. Also back is the Hunter Insurance Co. High-5 average weight award of $1,000 for the team that has the highest average weight for the five-tournaments. We give this money away at the TOC
The San Diego Team Series is always looking for new ways to give back to the local fishing community and to support the local fisherman. I have added a new Bonus for this year’s season called the fisherman stimulus package.
Due to the Covid 19 social distance and cover up policy that we have been enforcing this year at all the tournaments, we are unable to have our famous sit-down dinner and awards ceremony where we normally would eat a great meal and enjoy receiving product and gift certificates that have been donated by our loyal sponsors. To replace the Awards ceremony, we now will give away $600.00 at each even. It doesn’t matter if you finish 1st or last or if you catch a fish your team has a chance to win haft of the $600.00, Just by entering the tournament qualifies your team to win part of the money. We will put all weigh slips in a basket and the tournament champion will draw two-weigh slips. If you weight slip is drawn your team will win $300.00, we will notify you, and the money will be given to you at the next event. Good Luck to all

On a final note, my seasoned crew and I will be running the NEW Wild West Southern California Tournament Trail. The first event will be at Diamond Valley on February 20, 2021. For more information, please contact me and visit the website at 2021 SCHEDULE | Wild West Bass Trail.

Stay tuned and be safe.

We will only allow two people at the bump tanks and one person at the scales at any time. After the weigh in is complete we will do a modified awards ceremony in the parking lot maintaining six ft distance and facemarks. We will post final result and YTD standings on the SD Teams website. I realized some Anglers feel social distance is not for them but please respect other concerns and the rules so we can still enjoy what we love to do without being asked to shut down the tournaments. I am looking forward to our 21st season. Please be safe.
Sincerely,
Jim Sleight

[08/24/20]   STRELIC, CAUDLE TOP EL CAP; FIGY, HARGIS EARN AOY
Jon Strelic with partner David Caudle may not fish every event on the El Cajon Ford Day Series, but when they do, it seems they have a chance to win. They did it again at El Capitan, Saturday, with 20.05 pounds.
But the bigger story might be one big bite for the runners-up, Kalum Figy and Travis Hargis. It turned into an 8.63-pounder, that jumped them 14 points in the standings as they surged to a 4-point to win in the Angler of the Year race.
Still, give the El Cap winners their due. According to Strelic, “We really had nothing going, even though the bait was really thick. I wasn’t able to catch good breakers, so we fished structure.”
Strategically, the plan worked to perfection as they caught three of their keeper fish early on plastic worms--at first shallow and then deeper down to 28 feet as the sun got higher. “I think the key was, the breaker fish lured all the boats to one area, so we were able to fish wherever we wanted.”
Figy and Hargis stayed in one area pretty much the entire day—around Boulder Bay, according to Figy. Weighing in a total of 19.12 pounds, he reported, “We fished muddy banks near rock.” And though they were near enough to breaking fish, which allowed them to use spy baits, Figy’s big bass came on a 10-inch Hog Hustler worm in 20 feet of water. He added, “We had a little flurry early, but we caught fish pretty much all day.”
The third-place team of Scott McIntosh and Randy Sapp, who also relied on a big bass to bolster their position. A 6.5-pound largemouth, taken “dead-sticking” a homemade jig and trailer anchored their 17.32-pound bag. Said Sapp, “We had a limit in 20 minutes then it was slim pickings the rest of the day.”
As for the Angler of the Year race, taking the top spot was a culmination of the team’s new fishing approach. Said Figy, “Our strength is pre-spawn, so we had to adapt with new strategies this year. We really wanted it (AOY title) and we gave it our all.
“You sacrifice a lot in time and with family,” he confessed. “We’re glad we did it (earn the top spot). And I couldn’t have done it without my best friend and partner Travis.
Due to the shorten season, 30 teams are now qualified to fish the two-day TOC held on Oct 24,2020 at San V and Oct 25,2020 at El Cap. You need to visit the website to see if your have qualified. Stay safe and hope to see you at the TOC
