TAYLOR & BELL GET OTAY WIN
On heavy weekend of competitive fishing, 38 teams hit Lower Otay for the second round of the El Cajon Ford Day Series, and perennial heavyweights, Jon Bell and Craig Taylor prevailed with 15.15 pounds on the day.
Their catch included the biggest fish of the contest, a $500, 4.39-pounder and earned them a total of $3100 overall. With the scores tightly packed, their winning margin was better than 2 pounds.
According to Taylor, the team spent their time spot hopping, repeating their attack on the same water. After two pre-fish days in the previous weeks, the only adjustment they had to make was for the post-front conditions.
“We couldn’t get a bite early (in the back of Harvey Arm), the fish were more sluggish and didn’t want to chase,” he revealed. “We knew that wasn’t the key.” Instead, they broke out the spinning tackle and drop-shot rigs, concentrating especially in one 30 by 50-yard area with a drop-off that differed by a foot in depth. “There were six boats within 30 yards of us, and they were catching fish too. They just weren’t the same fish,” he reported.
“The fish really changed their attitude and seemed they were sucked up in the mud. It was hard to see them there on the bottom on down sonar. We really had to slow down, even dead-stick.”
In second place was the team of George and Andrew Kramer who also concentrated on the drop-shot, fishing the east side of the main lake and Otay Arm. Their 13.06-pound catch was worth $1300 and included second big fish, a 3.21 good for a matching Abu rod and reel worth $250.
Said George, “We were last in the second flight and when we saw all those boats heading for Harvey, we just stopped short.”
He added, “The bite was just like we had practiced, right after the cold front a couple of weeks back. The fish had moved off the beds to hard bottom from 8 to 15 feet. We came along with six-inch MMIII’s and had a small limit by 8:30, maybe 8 ½ pounds, but culled up after 10:30. Andrew jumped us up with a 2 ½ and 3 ¼ in the last 40 minutes.”
Nick Lerma and Harry Jioras closed the gap with a 3-pound kicker to slip into third place with 12.20 pounds good for $900. “We were Flippin’ the tules shallow all day,” Lerma revealed.
Taking the third big bass, good for $100 in gift certificates, was the 3.17 pounder taken by the team of Chris Buie and KC Leonard.
In the special drawing for “stimulus” cash, Mark Bowers/Jeff Teixeria took home $400.
The Day Series continues with a quick turn-around, March 12 at El Capitan.

NEW SEASON, FAMILIAR FACES TOP RISING SAN VICENTE
The kick-off event for the Day Series came on the third week of rising water at San Vicente, and 41 teams were looking for a good start to the 5-event circuit. But whatever the changes afforded by a rising barometer after another wind event leading into the weekend, it didn’t slow down Art Berry and Randy Sapp. The veteran team scored 16.54 pounds, including the biggest fish of the day, a 5.52-pounder.
That bag provided an almost 2-pound cushion over the runner-up and earned them $3000 for the win and another $500 for their big bass.
“The big fish came on a jig,” said Berry, without a lot of explanation. But given there were only three bass over four pounds in total, his method must have been somewhat singular. He did reveal, however, that bite was consistent throughout the day fishing a rootbeer-colored Bandit crankbait. His explanation for that success was succinct: “No rock.”
Taking second place was the team of Greg Miser and John Weber who tallied 14.62 pounds, including the second heaviest fish on the day weighing 4.22 pounds. That bag was good for $1200, while their big fish added a rod and reel combo valued at $300.
Like most of the top finishers, the runners-up were not sharing a lot. But according to Miser, their bite peaked in the late morning and the late afternoon, mostly on soft plastics, and one on a “winding bait.”
The third-place team of Jim Edwards and Bruce Smith finished with 13.81 pounds, good for $900 in cash. Plastic worms fished around 20 feet deep summed up their success.
It was the ninth-place team of Kalum Figy and Travis Hargis who posted the third big bass, a 4.06 that anchored their 12.54-pound bag. The catch garnered $300 for the bag and $100 for their best fish.
Bonus prizes and surprise cash will mark the 2020 version of the El Cajon Ford Day Series. El Cajon Ford has already committed $3000 in cash to the TOC in June—in addition to the portion provided by the contenders in each of five events.
Also, “First out of the money” cash, provided again by a generous Byron $200 marks each event, as well as a $1000 prize for the team catching the heaviest average weight on their best four of five finishes sponsor by Lyle Hunter Taxes and Insurance Service .Lastly, a bass fishing stimulus check for $400 will be drawn among those present at the awards ceremony for each tournament. The team of Brady King and Stephen Tucker were the lucky pair at San Vicente.
The Day Series now moves on to Lower Otay Lake, Feb. 26.
