La Jolla Kayak

Will was born with congenital heart disease and doctors told his parents that he would require on-going treatment and quite a few surgeries as he grew. Now at the age of 12, he’s become more aware of the gravity of his condition and, not surprising, he has suffered ongoing anxiety and fear surrounding his checkups and procedures. His most recent surgery happened at the beginning of the pandemic and happily, it was very successful. Will is very active and he loves to play sports and video games, and, as an only child, he is very close to his parents and they all love spending time together. When he knew he could receive a wish from Wishes & More, he became very thoughtful about what his priority wish would be – in fact we’ve heard about quite a few #1 wishes through his wish process; including, a Basketball Court, a Hot Tub, a Putting Green, Sport Court or a Swimming Pool. But what he ultimately landed on was a trip to go Snorkeling in California! The dates were set to go in mid-October, which is right at the end of beach season and in fact, we learned that snorkeling conditions were not ideal just a few days before they went. Nevertheless, the family was excited to spend time at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club and while they were there they enjoyed a campfire on the beach, golf every day on the resort’s executive course, pickleball, LEGOLAND, and the San Diego Zoo. Luckily the weather calmed enough, and the sun came out for their snorkeling day in the Bay with a special guide from La Jolla Kayak. He took them out to La Jolla Cove made sure they saw the sea lions, explored the caves and snorkeled in the Bay. Dad told us that “The entire experience, from beginning to end, could not have gone any better. We cannot thank you for all you did to make this trip so special and we are grateful to Wishes & More for the awesome work done to support kids and their families.”

Hello dolphin🐬🐬🐬🐬. This is just one of the many we saw on Sunday😍

This was the best Kayak experience I have ever had in my life. We saw so many dolphins today along with sea lions🦭, and seals. Our guides Sabrina and Ian were incredible. I highly recommend this experience to all. Also, the office staff were super cool. On a scale of 1-10 this place gets a 10. Thank you for a beautiful day😍😄🦈

Thank YOU to everyone who came out and helped with the beach cleanup at La Jolla Shores! We picked up over 35 lbs of trash- mostly small pieces of plastic, styrofoam bits, and cigarette butts.

Last week we delved into the oceanic wonders of the Terra Mar Tide Pools.

This week, we’re staying on that theme, skirting beneath the huge sandstone cliffs that plunge into the blue waters of La Jolla Cove.

This amazing coastline near La Jolla is unexpected and spectacular, and while there is a great blufftop walk along the cliffs (which I’ll highlight in the weeks to come), the best way to explore this coastline is by sea kayak.

Sea kayaks are stable, easy paddlers, and the La Jolla Shores area usually offers a gentle launch point, mostly free of surf.

Several helpful and knowledgeable rental and guide businesses are located near the launch point, including La Jolla Kayak and La Jolla Sea Caves Kayaks.

This is the best option for first-time explorers and removes the logistic hassles of finding boats and getting them to the water’s edge.

Forget something important? Towel? Sunscreen? Swimsuit? Go say hello to Coco and Izzy at nearby Surf Diva Surf School, a well-known surf school for women with a great retail location in the Shores area.

THE EXPERIENCE

It’s a still summer morning and the water beyond the launch point is blue and turquoise, clear.

The bottom, eight feet below, is dappled with light—like an enormous, sand-bottomed swimming pool. Lazily swimming along the bottom are dozens of Leopard Sharks (completely harmless!) that several snorkelers are floating above, yelping with excitement as they come up to talk to each other.

Beyond the shallows, the water turns a dark, cobalt blue as the depth increases and we make our way towards the cliffs ahead, a half-mile ahead. Kelp beds float serenely on the surface.

It’s a busy area. The La Jolla Ecological Reserve and Underwater Park is a marine protected area that’s a famous destination for snorkelers, divers, and kayakers to respectfully explore. It’s home to our friends—leopard sharks, Garibaldi (California’s state marine fish!), lush kelp beds, sea lions, and even the occasional pod of dolphins. On this windless day, the water is smooth and glassy.

We paddle with a light touch, taking our time, enjoying the views.
Soon, the cliffs loom overhead, overhanging, and riddled with sea caves. A nearby experienced kayaker paddles into the deep shade of one of the caves, paddles around a free-standing pillar, and strokes back out, a huge grin on his face.

His friends in a nearby boat laugh at his serious, relieved expression, but their smiles fade when he says, "Your turn." They, too, successfully enter and exit the mouth of the cave.

We continue exploring the coast, alternating between the cliff-side waters where sea lions bark, and the serene deeper waters of the kelp bed.

Before the sun rises too much further, we push in, happy with the morning’s micro-adventure and already anticipating breakfast at Richard Walker's Pancake House in the nearby posh downtown of La Jolla.
