San Diego Aftershocks Statement Regarding the Unsportsmanlike Actions and Skater Expulsion During the Denver Game at IHOD 2024.

The San Diego Aftershocks acknowledge the recent unsportsmanlike incident that occurred with one of our skaters, Lambo R. Feeties, during the Denver game at IHOD 2024. As a league we are deeply troubled and saddened by the actions that occurred on the track. We know that the actions of our skater reflect poorly on our organization. It is our responsibility as an organization and a chartered team to reflect on the decisions and actions taken by our skaters, make apologies and amends to those impacted that compensate for our wrongdoings, and make concrete changes to improve our organization. Our current priority is to take appropriate action reflective of the severity of the behavior and begin implementing corrective measures and upholding standards to ensure we never allow ourselves to be a part of a situation like this again. The Aftershocks are also dedicated to transparency and accountability and will make the roller derby community aware of future decisions that transpire as a result of this incident.
We would like to extend a heartfelt apology to the victim as well as the entire Denver Ground Control team. We would like to also apologize to the officials, tournament staff, host league of IHOD 2024, and the greater roller derby community who were affected by this incident. We deeply regret the incident that occurred during our game. Lambo’s actions do not reflect the culture of our league. However, we acknowledge that he is our teammate and we sincerely apologize for letting one of our teammates act in such an unnecessary and dishonorable manner. It is our responsibility to own our actions when we step out onto the track and as a team, we failed to represent the ideals of good sportsmanship. This behavior does not align with our team’s values and morals, and as an organization, we take full responsibility for not embodying the sportsmanship we wish to espouse. We recognize that the acceptance of this apology is a personal choice for all those impacted and we hope that our remorse and commitment to just outcomes are clear.
In response to the incident, The Aftershocks are taking the following steps:
1. Indefinite Suspension: The San Diego Aftershocks will impose an indefinite suspension on Lambo to be served effective immediately. This penalty will be enforced by the Aftershocks regardless of the outcomes of the MRDA grievance policy. This will allow the MRDA the time to complete their internal process but emphasize the seriousness of the situation and to show that his actions do not reflect our organization’s standards.
2. Public-Facing Aftershocks-Sponsored Play and Events: The Aftershocks will not welcome Lambo to any public-facing Aftershocks-sponsored scrimmages, games, or events. This measure will be taken to help ensure that the roller derby community feels more comfortable in spaces held by The Aftershocks. This also includes spectating in Aftershocks-sponsored games and events.
3. Resignation: Lambo has resigned as the Aftershocks Interleague Coordinator and Tremors (B-team) coach effective immediately. We will be replacing these roles with a new league election so that other MRDA teams may feel confident in conducting interleague conversations.
4. Anger Management Course: In response to the incident, our organization will be recommending for Lambo to attend an anger management program. These programs are psychoeducational interventions designed to assist individuals in recognizing anger triggers and effectively managing complex emotions. By participating in such classes, Lambo will hopefully gain valuable tools to maintain control over his anger, fostering a healthier and more productive approach to interpersonal interactions.
5. Organizing a Meeting with Denver Leadership: We feel it is important to open a direct line of communication with Denver and to discuss any additional measures they suggest to restore our now-damaged relationships. Our community is small and this impacts a broad spectrum of relationships: between the teams as entities who play independently as well as within the broader MRDA structure, between individual skaters on each team and skaters within our own team/league, who also interact in the community outside of these teams.
6. Establishing a Skater Conduct System: As a part of improving our entire league moving forward, our organization is committed to creating a safe and respectful environment for all players, to prevent any issues like this from occurring in the future. To achieve this, we will be developing a comprehensive tracking system to log and monitor behavioral incidents during practices and games. This system will include an intake form for individuals to submit any concerns or incidents they observe and will be monitored by league leadership. By collecting this data, we can identify issues early and implement targeted interventions within the league. Our goal is to prevent any gross misconduct issues in the future and ensure a positive experience for every skater who skates with and against our league.
7. Revisiting our Policies and Code of Conduct: We will conduct a review and revision of our policies, including CoC, in an effort to identify any areas that can be improved for the safety and wellbeing of our members, opponents, officials, volunteers, and the entire derby community.

As a league, we understand that these steps are only the beginning. The Aftershocks recognize that our response does not change what has happened and we are deeply sorry to all who have been affected. We are committed to upholding our league's standards moving forward and regaining the trust of our opponents, the MRDA, and the roller derby community through our future actions. We are also open to serious discussion from our opponents, the MRDA, and the larger roller derby community. We believe that together we can be better.
