A big part of Fox Studios legacy for over 35 years has been Robert Calderons contribution as studio manager.

Robert first taught jazz and ballet 3-4 years before getting more involved as Susan Maryn’s right hand!
Robert has helped organize and develop studio policies, manage staff, and is often the 1st person anyone sees or hears from when they first arrive to Fox Studio!

Thank you so much Robert for all of your hard work and dedication to Fox all of these years! You are greatly appreciated!

In honor of the 34th anniversary of the L. A. riots, it’s important to mention Fox Studios legacy, as it represents many who lost businesses in 1992.

During this time, the studio was on State Street in South Gate. As the whole town erupted, Susan went to pick me up, a very young Ms. Chelsea, early from school as the shopping plaza 1 block away was getting looted.

At one point I remember standing on the corner of where I lived and saw all the cars zipping by and all of the noise.

As our town was being confronted with the consequences of police brutality and marginalization, there was definitely a sense that a change was coming.

As a kid, I remember when my mom (Susan) decided to close down and seeing all of the stuff we were selling off or giving away. During the looting, they didn’t take too much, I guess they didn’t know how to walk down the street with balance beams and cheese mats so that was good for us 😆

From mirrors, to pianos to mats, it all had to go as my mom shut down and re-grouped for her next plan.
We lived across the street from the YWCA in Huntington Park and it was there we found a home to teach classes out of for 2-3 years. In the middle of all of that, Susan knew of Laurie Jean who used to have a dance studio in Sylmar.

After doing some research, Susan opened up her 1st small studio on Foothill right next to Carusos & the rest is history!

This one goes out to anyone experiencing hardship while trying to make their dream happen & to the businesses lost during the riots!

Sometimes, not every disaster is a setback, but more of a redirection.
