TODAY is the deadline. 🚨

Go viral for the arts: grab your phone, record a short video, and tell California lawmakers why arts and culture matter to YOU.

Make it personal, make it real, make it loud. Every post counts before the May 22 cutoff. 💪

Take Action:

California is at a critical crossroads. While the state proposes a massive $350 billion budget fueled by the AI tech boom, investment in our heartbeat—arts, culture, and human creativity—is being left behind. The Governor’s May revision maintains flat funding, leaving the state arts agency, the California Arts Council (CAC) with just $24 million in grant funding to support our entire state.

This is a staggering shortfall when faced most recently with the $90 million of eligible requests from communities desperate to keep their cultural districts, and arts and cultural programs alive. Furthermore, the Performing Arts Equitable Payroll Fund remains without renewed support, a critical oversight given the massive need shown during its first round of funding.

is teaching for tomorrow, Saturday at 11:15am at Dance Mission!

Zimbabwean Traditional Dance class with Kanukai will explore the techniques, rhythms, and traditional dances of Zimbabwe. We will learn and practice dance moves going across the floor and a mini choreography at the end.

Kanukai Chigamba is a multifaceted dancer, musician, performer, and burgeoning photographer. She started dancing at a young age in Harare, Zimbabwe, at Biras and as part of Mhembero Dance Troupe. She is the Assistant Director of the renowned Chinyakare Ensemble, and principal in Gbedu Town Radio, a Pan Afro Urban Music and Dance Ensemble. Chigamba has performed all over the United States, including at the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, Oregon Zimfest, Monterey Bay Reggaefest, Stern Grove Festival, Carnegie Hall, Princeton University, and Oakland Museum of California. She currently resides in the Bay Area where she performs and teaches in elementary and middle schools. Her travels to Togo, Nigeria, and her work with Yoram Savion/YAK Films, Julia Chigamba, Nkeiruka Oruche, Destiny Arts, and Afro Urban Society find her embarking on her photographic essay series featuring African women navigating complexities of emotional expression.
