2nd Annual Día de Yemaya
with Susana Arenas Pedroso + musicians
Monday, Sept 7 – 12-2pm
At OCEAN BEACH, SF (note location!)
Presented by Arenas Dance Company and Dance Mission’s Liberation Academy.

We will gather at “Kelly’s Cove” at Ocean Beach. Park at the Great Highway and Balboa Streets and go down stairs #1 and head toward the water. Look to the right for a Cuban flag. Please note that there is no bathroom here. The closest public restroom is on the ground floor of the Beach Chalet (Great Highway and Fulton Streets).

“El Día de Yemayá” refers to celebrations and rituals honoring Yemayá, the powerful Yoruba orisha of motherhood and the sea. In Cuba Yemaya is honored on Sept 7. Join Susana Arenas Pedroso and drummers for this special dance class to honor Yemaya at the beach. Blue and white clothing is encouraged. You are also welcome to bring white flowers and fruit as an offering.

House Performance Workshop: Storytelling and Word-Building
with Nicole Klaymoon

NOTE: Drop-ins are welcome! Each class stands alone as a dynamic movement experience and full-body workout, while the full series offers the opportunity to deepen your artistic practice and perform in an original collaborative piece. BUT!! If you would like to perform, you must commit to the entire series.

This workshop invites artists of all levels into a rigorous, unfettered creative laboratory where physical training meets artistic inquiry. Fueled by an eclectic, soulful playlists, each class is equal parts workout, moving meditation, improvisation and performance practice.

Rather than learning choreography, participants explore improvisation, inventive movement scores, and collaborative composition to unlock imagination, deepen storytelling, and cultivate their distinct stage presence.

Drawing on over 20 years of developing her interdisciplinary dance-making methodology, Klaymoon guides artists to discover their authentic voice. Rooted in courageous play, ensemble building, and multidisciplinary storytelling, the workshop also offers development in spoken word, theatrical expression, and optional reflective journal exercises outside of rehearsal for artists interested in a holistic approach to creative practice.

Talk Story is a new performance series for stories told in the hilarious, profound, mutable, silly, heartrending, generous, outrageous, infuriating, transformative language of dance. For Talk Story #1, you’ll experience four short works by Sharp & Fine and three guest artists, then join us for a casual conversation about storytelling and dance. Our guest artists are folks we think are making some of the most riveting, ambitious, and refreshingly earnest dance work happening now.
