Technology is a powerful tool for improving productivity and efficiency. But like anything, it reaches a point of diminishing returns, eventually becoming counterproductive to our physical and mental health.
The rise of AI amplifies both sides. Used well, it automates mundane tasks and frees you to focus on higher level work. Used poorly, it becomes a crutch that erodes critical thinking.
Donât get me wrong â Iâm just as guilty as anybody when it comes to this stuff. Iâm constantly working to minimize screentime, resist the urge to doomscroll, and limit my dependence on AI. Iâve found that spending time outside is the best remedy.
Thatâs why weâre challenging our community this month to hit 10,000 steps every day. The average American adult takes about 4,800 steps daily, and fewer than 5,000 is considered sedentary. By modeling an active lifestyle and setting boundaries around technology, we can set a better example for the next generation.
The Challenge:
âď¸Move: Hit your 10,000-step goal through your daily commute, walks, or training.
âď¸Log: Every time you hit the mark, scan the in-gym QR codes to log your success (or click the Link in Bio on IG to log!).
âď¸Prize: Every logged day is an entry to win an exclusive giveaway at the end of the month.

It took a little longer than expected this year because Joe was deep in the trenches gathering every bit of data, and now the 2025 Year in Review is officially live. đ
If you want to know what itâs actually like to run The Yard, this is a must-read. Joe is incredibly raw and honest in this one, from the highs of 34% revenue growth and hitting a 4.96 guest satisfaction rate, to the real-world gut punches: sudden resignations, construction delays, and the battle of defending our brand name in an increasingly competitive market.
Whether youâre a member, a trainer, or just someone interested in the reality of entrepreneurship, Joeâs reflection on Year 4 is his most candid yet.

At The Yard, we arenât just focused on what happens inside your pod, weâre focused on the other 23 hours of your day. This month, weâre leaning into the science of consistent movement with our 30-Day 10k Step Challenge. Whether youâre a weekend warrior or training for a marathon, increasing your baseline activity is the simplest way to improve body recomposition and long-term health.
Why weâre walking 10k a day:
âď¸Aerobic Base: Building a foundational engine without adding extra stress to the body. âď¸Metabolic Health: Supporting fat loss and recovery by staying active throughout the work day.
âď¸Joint Longevity: Counteracting the mechanical toll of sitting for 8+ hours.
Check out our full sit-down with Trainer to learn how he balances high-mileage endurance with heavy lifting, and how to hit your goals during our step challenge! Make sure to log your steps to win big at the end of the month!
I canât point to a single moment when I felt like weâd âmade itâ at The Yard Strength Training. Maybe itâs impostor syndrome, or maybe itâs the fear that acknowledging success leads to complacency.
Iâm sure a lot of small business owners can relate. When youâre in the weeds every day, over the course of years, growth feels incremental at best. Some days feel more like defense than offenseâjust trying to keep the bottom from falling out.
The same is true in fitness. Gains donât happen overnight; theyâre the result of years of consistent effort.
That can feel daunting if youâre just starting your entrepreneurial or fitness journey. But I like to frame it in a way that removes the pressure: start small. Commit to something you can sustain over the long term. Once it becomes a habit, build on it incrementally. Look back in a few years, and youâll be shocked at how far youâve come.
At The Yard, we obsess over the mechanics of a squat. But for the female athlete, there is a secondary foundation often ignored: hormonal health. We sat down with Izzy, founder of DailyBasis, to bridge the gap between high-performance training and biological reality.
Inside the interview: đŞ The Power Phase: When to push for PRs. đ§ Data over Liability: Turning your cycle into an athletic advantage. đĽ The Nutritional Gap: Why male-default supplements fall short.

What is The Yard?
Iâve given this spiel so many times over the years that I could do it in my sleep. We operate two reservation-based strength studios in SF and Mill Valley. When you book a session at The Yard, you get your own squat rack for the hour (we call them âpodsâ), along with shared access to free weights, cardio equipment, and cable machines.
Our model serves two types of users:
Independent Personal Trainers. Trainers reserve pods for private Client sessions. The Trainer pays the gym; the Client pays the Trainer. Our Trainers love us because they can program with confidence, knowing exactly what equipment theyâll have exclusive access to. Our model allows them to earn 3â5x more than they would at a traditional commercial gym. This offering is inspired by models like barbershops and commissary kitchensâindependent professionals sharing high-quality, standardized infrastructure while running their own businesses under one roof.
Individual Members. Members reserve pods for their own workouts. Our communityâbusy professionals, young parents, and moreâgets more efficient, productive sessions, leading to meaningful physical transformations. This offering is rooted in my own experience: after nearly 20 years of lifting, I know the frustration of waiting for a rack, rushing through sets, or reordering workouts based on equipment availability. Like many of our members, Iâm now in the best shape of my life since adopting this model.
