If breath is one of the most important things in our lives. That would make the ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—บ one of the most important muscles within the human body. A dome-shaped muscle that separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities and serves as the bodyโ€™s primary breathing muscle. It plays a vital role in respiration by contracting downward during inhalation to increase thoracic volume and relaxing upward during exhalation to expel air. Its efficient function is essential for proper oxygen exchange and overall health.

๐—”๐—ป๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜†, the diaphragm is divided into ๐˜๐˜„๐—ผ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ต๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—บ๐˜€: ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐˜ & ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ต๐˜. These two halves function semi-independently but coordinate during breathing. The right hemidiaphragm is larger, thicker, and sits higher due to the liver beneath it, while the left hemidiaphragm is smaller and slightly lower, influenced by the stomach and spleen. This asymmetry is vital for accommodating the organs beneath. Each hemidiaphragm contributes to creating balanced breathing mechanics, though postural habits, injuries, or conditions like scoliosis can disrupt this.

RUNSTRONG is a new clinic run by PT DPT and Coach Andrew Tran. Andrew holds comprehensive $250 one-on-one 1 hour sessions every second Monday each month. For May, we are offering a 20% discount!

Sessions includes videoing running technique, and identifying any gait issues that may cause slow-onset injuries. All registrants receive an analysis in report-form on what to work on along with some corrective exercises.

Andrew Tran is a Physical Therapist, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, and USATF-certified coach.
He coaches high school cross country, track & field, and trains with the City Speed SF track & field club.
