Why a Complete Exhale Beats âSucking Your Belly Button Inâ Most people have been taught to pull their belly button toward their spine to activate their core. The problem? That cue often targets only part of the abdominal wall. A complete exhale is different. As you fully empty the lungs: ⢠The diaphragm rises ⢠The ribs move down and inward ⢠The obliques engage ⢠The pelvic floor responds ⢠The entire abdominal wall contracts In other words, youâre not just activating a muscle. Youâre activating the entire core system. The strongest core contraction often happens during the last few seconds of a long, controlled exhale, when most people think theyâre already âdoneâ breathing out. Try it: 1. Pull your belly button in. 2. Notice the feeling. 3. Now take a breath in and slowly exhale for 8 seconds. 4. Keep exhaling for another 1â2 seconds. Feel the difference. Your exhale may be the most overlooked core exercise you do all day. Join the upcoming 9-Week HYPOXiX Collective to learn how long, engaged exhales can improve core function, breathing efficiency, posture, and nervous system regulation.
