Question for Utah residents - Why is the population of mule deer on an overall decline across the beehive state?

You can see on the chart in picture two that between 1960 and 1990 there was a high of 250,000 general season deer hunters afield across the State in a single year. In that same time period there was a high of over 130,000 deer harvested in a single year.

Now fast forward to 2022 - there was 73,075 general season permits across the State. The total amount of harvests was 23,286.

We can see that the amount of hunters afield is down over 70% from the high, and the amount of harvest is down over 82% from the high.

The deer population has been on a 40 year downward trend from a peak population of about 600,000 in the 1950s and 1960s, to an estimated 305,700 in 2022.

What is happening to mule deer? Everyone screams “DWR mismanagement” as their first go to when they can’t find or kill a deer. But, the massive reduction in tags and million dollar conservation projects say differently. It may be a combination of roadkill, development, weather etc.
