Deborah Slater Dance Theater

For 46 years DSDT/Studio 210 has been an integral part of San Francisco’s vibrant dance and theater community, providing affordable space to artists, creating and presenting innovative artistic work, and mentoring and supporting artists in our community. In 2026, we remain one of the few intimate spaces for artists to create and present work, experiment and explore, and bring their communities together. We are here today in no small part because of you, our supporters, and we cannot thank you enough for helping sustain us over the years.

Increased expenses and dwindling public and private grant funds are hitting us hard - really hard. Foundation grants to the performing arts declined by 37% in 2024 and government funding dropped by 26% (source: SMU DataArts), with $5 million slashed from the California Arts Council budget alone. Our state funding has decreased by 70% since 2023, significantly affecting our ability to operate and forcing us to pause the Studio 210 Residency this summer.

Despite our financial challenges, we are incredibly excited to continue sharing space with the hundreds of artists that call Studio 210 home, are thrilled to have re-staged DSDT’s SHOUT IN DARK: A Guide to Hope & Good Grief over four sold out shows at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center in Berkeley last month, and are so proud of a successful Winter 2026 Studio 210 Residency with residents Erin Yen & Babatunji Johnson and Guest Mentor KT Nelson.

We are currently working very hard to raise enough money to bring the Residency back in 2027, one of the reasons we are reaching out to you today.
