Playland at 43rd Avenue

What are your favorite memories of Playland?
Bring a photo (or photos!), a letter, or a small object* to keep in the Time Capsule that will be installed at the new housing project.
We’ll have a ceremony at the closing party!
Materials for letter writing will be available.
What not to bring: no food, liquids, plants, or other living items that can decompose. No large items either, since we have limited space.

Don’t miss out on the fun! Here’s the program for Playland’s Closing Party this Saturday, May 7, starting at 10am.
Gordon Mar 馬兆明 will kick us off with some remarks and community acknowledgements, followed by a Time Capsule ceremony (bring a letter or photo!), and cake from Devil's Teeth Baking Company!
Next up, Upstar Records a project of Sunset Youth Services will blow us away with live performances, followed by a Skate Jam for all age groups brought by Left Side and !
Starting at noon, art workshops and activities with Karen and Kelly, and a garden workshop with Markos at Climate Action Now!
Our friends at FOAM will have boba tea and local eats for sale. Thanks Sunset Mercantile!
Last but not least, thanks to Ron and Dawn for bringing the sound system 🔊🎚🎛 and the whole Sunset YOUTH Services crew for supporting this project from day one!

After 6 years of fun and adventures, Playland will close and make way for the Shirley Chisholm Village Educator Housing project.

Belated announcement: Playland has a new steward/park manager! Introducing Karen Hendricksen, a local resident, ceramic artist, floral designer, and mom. She’s passionate about building community and literacy. Karen enjoys interacting with diverse communities and ages. As a parent, she knows how important it is to have a safe and engaging space to be with children and meet other parents.
You may have seen Karen around already (in a bright orange jacket, or holding a big red mushroom), not only working hard at keeping Playland green, clean, and safe, but also working and volunteering with Sunset Youth Services, the Children’s Book Project, and Sunset Mercantile ().
Together with the Sunset Youth Services family, Karen will make sure Playland continues to thrive, as we near the end of its life before making way for educator housing in 2022. A special shout-out to Mutasem (Mo) Dajani, Dawn Stueckle, and the youth staff who have been caring for this space since its opening, back in 2016. We couldn’t do this without you!
Last but not least, a special thank you to Frances England () and John Funke () who served as stewards of this space for 2 years before Karen, and worked tirelessly to maintain the Playland spirit!

Hi Friends! This Sunday from 11-4 Justin Marks will be leading a skatepark maintenance day at Playland replacing skatelite, patching holes & fixing ramps. Come lend a hand if you want to volunteer!
