Keiko Fukuda was the first and only woman to earn a 10th-degree black belt in judo, achieving this honor at age 98.

Born in 1913 and the granddaughter of Jigoro Kano’s jujutsu teacher, she defied gender norms to dedicate her life to judo.

She moved to the U.S., founded the all-women Soko Joshi Judo Club, and taught well into her late 90s.

Fukuda passed away at 99 but left a lasting legacy of strength, grace, and perseverance. Her motto, “Be strong, be gentle, be beautiful,” continues to inspire martial artists worldwide.

She was the last surviving student of Kano himself. Despite early obstacles, she never married, choosing the “path of judo.” Her story symbolizes discipline, resilience, and empowerment.
