Before Golden Gate Park became the lush, green oasis we know today, it was a barren stretch of sand dunes. In the late 1800s, the area was a windswept wasteland known as the "Outside Lands." Transforming this challenging terrain into a thriving park required ingenuity—park engineer William Hammond Hall and master gardener John McLaren used a mix of irrigation techniques and hardy, fast-growing plants like lupine to stabilize the sand before introducing trees and other vegetation.
Today, Golden Gate Park is a masterpiece of urban landscaping, boasting meadows, lakes, gardens, and countless trails perfect for exploring by bike. Join Dandyhorse SF Bike Tours to ride through this stunning park and hear more about its remarkable transformation from sand dunes to one of the most beautiful urban parks in the world.

Step back in time to 1867, when an artist captured a remarkable view of northern San Francisco, with the Golden Gate prominently framed in the center. Before the iconic bridge was constructed, this natural strait served as the gateway to the Pacific, with ships navigating its waters to reach the bustling city. The drawing reveals a landscape of rolling hills and open space, offering a glimpse of a quieter San Francisco on the brink of transformation into the urban hub we know today.
This fascinating history comes alive on Dandyhorse SF Bike Tours as you take in modern-day views of the Golden Gate from incredible vantage points. It’s a chance to reflect on how much the city has grown while appreciating the enduring beauty of its natural surroundings.
