The woman who adopted Veronica had not even come to the shelter looking for her. That may be the sweetest part of the whole story.

Veronica was a one-year-old Labrador mix at Walton County Animal Services in Florida after being found wandering near Highway 331 North in DeFuniak Springs. When no family came to claim her, the gentle young dog became available for adoption.

Then a woman arrived hoping to meet a different dog. Shelter staff member Dale Pugh suggested she also meet Veronica, who was known around the shelter for her calm, affectionate personality. The moment the woman stepped into the play yard, Veronica attached herself to her leg and refused to let go.

While her new mom sat finishing the paperwork, Veronica rose onto her hind legs and leaned into the woman's space, wrapping herself around her as if the formalities were taking far too long. She did not need to understand signatures to understand affection. Minutes earlier this woman had been a stranger, and now Veronica was already loving her before the ink was even dry.
