I didn’t hit my goal…
I started by reading a book a week and realized I wasn’t taking my time and receiving the lessons from them. So, I slowed down a bit.
Not all books I read were great but at least I took something from them. When it comes to books that really have that ‘WOW’ factor, I write notes and a personal book report for it on evernote.
“If you’re not learning and growing, you’re dying”. - Unknown.
It sounds precarious I know, but it helped me get my butt in gear. I wasn't a star student in school and when I read “Managing Oneself” by Peter F. Drucker and learned about learning styles, I knew that listening was my weakest style. My brain needs to feel, see, hear, try it, make mistakes, "break" things, talk about it, and ask questions.
That learning was passed down to me by my father for sure HA. Give me a physical book and a pen, and there'll be so many marks in the book. I kind of follow Ryan Holiday’s style of reading (one of my favorite authors) - https://lnkd.in/gCssKjaA
My year of reading consisted of: Biographies/memoirs, biology, psychology, self-dev, business, sociology, philosophy, sci-fi, history, and more. I can confidently say my itch of curiosity and learning has been the secret to my success. I apply what I learn immediately, sometimes it works, and most times it doesn’t. But, when it works, it makes impact and that's what I'm here for. Over the next few weeks, I'll be providing thoughts on my FAVORITE books of this year (taking from my notes) and sharing it with you all!

Twelve years ago I was overweight, sick, depressed, and purposeless. I had some really scary thoughts back then. I was living alone in a basement apartment, working at AT&T with no thought on my future, I was going with the motions. I knew I didn’t want to stay in retail for the rest of my life. I had goals, I had dreams, but I had absolutely no idea how they would work. When I’d have these thoughts, I would stress eat at the thought of the future.
The hardest part of being a young boy with no mentors or initiation is this directionless path that we take. It usually leads to one making bad decisions. I made bad decisions with my health, my body, my relationships, and my mindset. Then, one day a guy I barely knew who was part of the multi-level marketing thing I did recommended a book to me. The book was “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki. I jumped in on books similar to “The Secret”, “Think & Grow Rich”, “The Power of Positive Thinking”, and many more… yet I was still in this drudgery.
Don’t. In comments.

Want to know a quick shift to give you more energy throughout the day. This is just one of many…

Save all your heavy carbohydrates for dinner. Sandwich for lunch? Rice bowl? Pastry? Burrito? Candies? “Energy” bars? All are on the side of heavy carbs that make you want to grab some ZZZs.
Now I’m not saying to get rid of ALL carbs, just limit the amount you intake. Whole foods like sweet potato, avocados, broccoli, cabbage, cucumbers are decent carb options. The reason why is because your energy levels and blood sugar are closely related. I'll explain....
Can you guess what carbs like pastries and breads do to your blood sugar? (graphic glycemic index - https://bit.ly/3EstL3Z)
I have a graph that I can share if you'd like via DM. In this graph it shows this huge bump but an immediate dip with blood sugar which can cause an immediate call for a nap... That dip is energy going bye-bye vs. protein/fats that give you a steady amount of energy.
I also have another graphic that’s gives you a better idea of what happens when you have a high amount of carbs for breakfast.
The idea that having carbs early to have energy throughout the day is ruining your ability to activate your work super powers.
For example, I only have quick carbs if I have to run in the AM like Blueberries or half a banana. If you’re a runner, a little protein and a decent amount of carbs is good at least 45 minutes - 1 hour pre-run.
I am a big fan of saving those high glycemic carbs for days that I’ve moved/exercised a lot and save them for my last meal before 7pm. An example is pictured below after a day that consisted of a 4 mile run and 1 hour of Brazilian Jiu - Jitsu.
Having rice for instance helps with a restful night of sleep. This information is for the average individual, there are some folks this may not happen to due to bio-individuality. Which is a very REAL thing, it’s best to work closely with a coach and professional to get a better sense of this.
Have questions? Feel free to shoot me a DM!

Let me share a secret with you busy bee’s…

Sitting all day and jumping straight into a 45 minute gym/workout session is not the play. That’s even if you make the time for those 45 minutes. So hear me out…
One of the best things I learned through my education has been to sprinkle movement throughout the day. What does this look like?
🚶 - Walking
This has been a game changer since the pandemic began, if you have a dog - you already do this. Get 15 minutes in the AM while drinking coffee or walking the baby while you’re getting sun. Stacking all this healthified goodness first thing. Go You!
💻 - Standing Desk Life
A standing desk while you work is life altering. As long as you keep your spine straight (so you may have to get a laptop stand so you don’t get text-neck. This simple change can make a huge difference in movement as you’re stepping between different stances.
😮 - Get a Balance Ball
One of the best purchases of 2020 I had was a balance ball. I use this as my chair instead of your Western ergonomic chair. This is a game changer because to sit, you have to keep your core intact. This creates strong hips and better balance.
There are many other ideas I can add here to add a bit of movement throughout your day by just changing things you already do. What do you do to sprinkle in a little movement outside of just the gym or a quick run? Curious to hear your answer!
In this photo: I’m sitting on the floor with a meditation pillow to change it up. It allows me to change positions and move my hips a bit as I balance. It’s these small things that make large differences
