dhāranā is the practice of focusing the mind on a specific point of concentration. it is the 6th limb. it comes after first becoming proficient at living an ethical life, making the body fit enough to sit for periods of time, mastering the breath, and developing control over the senses
traditionally, this means practicing focused concentration on a mantra, diety or cakra- for example. there are many benefits, particularly that lead to dhyāna - meditation.
this practice can also lead to an awareness of what we focus on in general. in what direction does the mind wander? and where does it most often land? this awareness allows us to notice and, if needed, course correct. in which direction does your heart want to go? is the mind hooked to that, or to something that is not that? then, choose. choose your direction. choose your life.
