Often asked question is “what kind of paint do you use?”
Let’s just say I have tried a few different options of paint on weights!
I have tried the cheapest $1.00 spray can to the most expensive available. Clear coat over paint. I’ve tried the hammerhead style paint out of the can and spray similar to what the manufacturers use. Even tried powder coating weights. Unfortunately none of these have held up to the standard of durability. Chipping and scratching for sure!! I would sandblast for etching and oven bake the weights after painting to try and cure them faster and harder. Oven curing and etching would help but still, durability was based on the type of paint being used.
There are literally no videos on the internet showing or providing materials on how the top manufacturers paint their iron plates. I just about gave up because I wanted more durability out of customizing/restoring weights.
Then I decided to look more into . I figured since it’s been used on barbells and holds up very well, why not try it on dumbbells and plates. And so here we are. I may have found what I was looking for.
Cerakote is a thin ceramic paint mostly used on fire arms and engine parts for its high durability. Cerakote provides an oven cure and air cure option which means it can be done at home. Two main drawbacks are you will need a small air spray gun and weights and bars will need to be sandblasted prior to paint.
Really looking forward to using this product and making weights and bars customized to last!!
