Bikram's Beginning Yoga, the original hot yoga, is a unique 90 minute series of 26 postures, including 2 breathing exercises, performed in a specially heated room. Each posture stretches and strengthens specific muscles, ligaments and joints stimulating the organs, glands and nerves to move fresh oxygenated blood to 100% of the body. With regular practice, Bikram Yoga improves health, increases en

BYSJ member Mellanie Ong has been practicing Bikram Yoga for nine years and says this year has been her most rewarding.
“There’s nothing like surpassing your own expectations! When it gets harder, it becomes manageable. When it seems impossible, it becomes unstoppable.
From my yoga practice, I’ve gained mental wellness, positive energy, and a more open, less judgmental mindset. If you had asked me three years ago what yoga had given me, I wouldn’t have had an answer. I knew I had to keep going, even if I didn’t understand why. It might sound strange, but it took me years to find that answer.
Every time I push myself to go to the studio, even when I’m tempted to skip, I come out feeling rejuvenated. The flood of oxygen to my brain brings fresh ideas, increases my productivity at work, and gives me the clarity to navigate daily challenges.
Yoga has taught me that we are ever-changing, from one moment to the next, and that what you perceive is not always reality. Making it to the studio, no matter what, is the first step toward a brighter day."

Time for a BYSJ Posture Talk! The video and blog are in the link below.
Right away, Bikram Yoga has you working the spine with the Half Moon pose – Ardha Chandrasana.
Michele Vennard and Matt and Sarah Newman got together to discuss the intention and technique of this posture. Watch the video of their discussion and demo, and read all about it on our blog.
Michele says, "One of the things I look forward to in Half Moon is, after a good Pranayama, I know my lungs are ready. When I move to the right or left side, I love that stretch in my intercostals – to get that movement from side to side feels so good. And then the backbend, with that initial one, you feel so tight and stiff. And then you see people sacrificing form. We always say that you don’t want to sacrifice form for depth. It’s just constantly listening to the instructions and doing it the right way."

If you practice at the 9:15 am class, it's very likely you've seen Linda Gojenola – a dedicated yogi, avid hiker, and can you believe she's a grandma?
How did you first discover Bikram yoga?
A friend told me about it in late 2007. It sounded like an intense workout, so I decided to give it a try. I took my first class in January of 2008.
What have you gained from your yoga practice?
I’ve learned to be patient as progress takes time, months and years! This was hard for me as I’m not the most patient person! I’ve learned the value of breath. The harder the class, the more I focus on my breathing.
What do you like to do outside of yoga?
I’m an avid hiker (I❤️Tahoe), gardener, DIYer, and Peloton rider. I enjoy reading, watercolor painting, and spending time with my family, especially my two little grandsons. My friends tell me I have crazy good energy. It must be the yoga!

"None of us are meant to simply get through anything – we are meant to have Joy and enjoy LIFE – the one that is yours, established from the day you were born. Woo-hoo! And get this: even in tough situations, those that give us hardship and pain are part of the JOY – you are alive, and peculiarly so, having the ability to experience it ALL!"

BYSJ member Tami Chau shares what her yoga practice has been like going from pregnancy into motherhood. She has been a BYSJ member for almost ten years and utilized our livestream yoga classes and Rajashree’s pregnancy series to ensure she was well-prepared for the birth of her son.
"One of my proudest achievements was completing two 60 Day Challenges – one while pregnant. Thanks to Rajashree’s daily pregnancy yoga practice, I avoided morning sickness and nausea. Even in my third trimester, I had good blood circulation and minimal back pain. Life has its share of challenges, so I’m grateful to find peace on my yoga mat, whether in the studio or practicing online."
Her advice? “Don’t skip Camel pose, even if it seems intimidating. You might find it’s precisely what your body needs.”
