Quick Tips to Develop Confidence in Children
Confidence is ALWAYS moving. With every success, confidence rises and with every failure (or at least perceived lack of recognition) confidence will erode.
If a child is suffering from a low confidence, its generally from a lack of recognition as to what is going well. When to much focus is on failure, more failures show up and it becomes a self perpetuating cycle.
START SMALL Be aware of only congratulating BIG accomplishments. Praise the small or subtle ones. “I am so proud of you for trying out that new thing.” Or “That was great, I liked the way that you talked to your little sister. Be a good finder.
ACKNOWLEDGE THE PAST AND TIE IT TO THE PRESENT Confidence comes from improvement. Show the child that they are moving in the right direction. “Do you remember when you were scared to try something new? You were incredibly brave today." If the child lacks past experience, tie it in to your past. “I remember when I was a kid of the same situation, I was scared. You are already doing a better job than I did. It would have been great to be more brave like you”.
VISUALIZE THE FUTURE AND TIE IT TO THE PRESENT Assist your children in setting up a road map for success. “Now that you tried out baseball, can you imagine what it is going to be like to play in high school?” What do you believe will be the best thing about it? Wait for their answer. Ask them what things that they can do to help them get to that point. Treat it like it is already here. This is your chance to role model. Be a mentor to your child and set the example as to how a confident adult carries him/herself.
REMIND THEM OF THE PRESENT Be lavish with your praise. I am so proud of you trying this new thing.
Present to Past/Present to Future/Present. This is the same formula that we use to great success in teaching martial arts.
If you have any questions or comments, please let me know how we can be of service to your family.
