Scott Maurice Fey
July 19,1968 - July 21, 2022

Scott retired from San Jose Fire after serving 25 years. His compassion and bravery were evident in call after call helping to rescue and give comfort to people in their most desperate times and often their final moments.

In his retirement, Scott battled PTSD symptoms. He paved the way for other firefighters by winning an important legal battle fighting for the greater good of all his fellow firefighters who suffer from PTSD.

DIED IN THE LINE OF DUTY:

On-Duty Electrocution

A large tree, its roots loosened by a minor earthquake, fell from an embankment in Alum Rock Park near the interurban car tracks, bringing down the trolley wire and an 11,000 volt feeder circuit which was broken at several points.

Sparks from the fallen wires started a ten-acre grass fire. Trying to put it out, two passersby were killed by accidental contact with the high voltage line. A fire alarm was turned in, and Chemical Co. No. 6 responded from five miles away at 17th and Santa Clara Streets (today’s Engine 8 headquarters)

Unaware of the electrical hazard (the earlier victims having been removed by rescuers), Fireman Consolacio was using a chemical line on the fire when the stream contacted the down wires. He was killed instantly by the electrical current.

For every firefighter who came before us—thank you.

This union wasn’t built overnight. It was built on blood, sweat, and tears. It was built by members who stood together, fought for one another, and never lost sight of why we wear this badge: to protect each other and the citizens we are sworn to serve.

The culture we enjoy today didn’t happen by accident. It was earned through sacrifice, courage, and a commitment to leaving this department better than you found it. Every contract fought for, every policy improved, every battle won was because someone before us was willing to stand up.

To our retirees and those who paved the way—we are grateful. We stand on your shoulders.

And to the next generation of aspiring firefighters and our newest members: this is what it’s all about. Learn the history. Honor the traditions. Protect the culture. Then leave this organization stronger than it was when you arrived.

That’s how Local 230 has endured for generations. That’s how we’ll continue to build the future.

Rick was a true Renaissance man who marveled at the entire world, from the sky to the deep blue sea. His love of airplanes was inherited from his father, Francis Wardall, who worked for Lockheed. He was involved in engineering the famed P-38 fighter plane during WWII. Rick’s love of planes transferred to the fire department, where he worked as an engineer at Station 20, located at SJIA. He always amazed the crew by knowing the type of aircraft just by the sound of its engine.

Rick loved being a firefighter. He moved through many ranks and job descriptions including firefighter, paramedic, engineer and captain. He was known for how much he cared about helping people, his sense of humor, incredible smile, and amazing engineering and problem-solving skills.

“When firefighters stand together, we protect more than communities—we protect our future.”

Today, firefighters from across California stood together in support of AB 1383 and meaningful pension reform.

Thank you to our members, retirees, labor partners, and brothers and sisters from fire departments throughout the state who took the time to show up, speak out, and fight for the future of our profession.

Pension security is not just about today’s firefighters—it is about protecting the retirement dignity of those who dedicate their lives to serving their communities and ensuring future generations have a career worth pursuing.

Real change only happens when we stand united. Every phone call, every conversation with a legislator, every rally, and every member who takes action makes a difference.

We can only accomplish this together.
