We talk a lot about the mitochondria here at Joovv. So today, I wanted to give a quick breakdown of what the mitochondrial is and how red light effects and enhances it.
Mitochondria are structures found in almost every single cell of the human body (all except red blood cells). They’re often nicknamed “the powerhouse or battery” of cells because they help convert usable energy (ATP) into a form that cells can use. Human cells may house anywhere from 2 to 2,500 mitochondria, depending on tissue type, antioxidant status, and other factors.
The problem is that as we age, our mitochondria deteriorate and malfunction. Age-related destruction of the mitochondria occurs more rapidly than in other cell components, meaning that for most people it is loss of functional mitochondria that ultimately leads to personal extinction. Yikes, right?!
So how can red light therapy help? Well, light is vital nourishment for our cells. We absorb light through our eyes and our skin. Light is a stimulus that charges the mitochondria, the battery (or powerhouse) for each cell. This creates the natural flow of electricity and energy within the body. Our electrical system, in turn, triggers the chemical reactions - the hormones, vitamins, minerals, enzymes - for our bodies to function. Simply put, red light therapy helps recharge your batteries and stimulate ATP production by up to 200%, powering your cells to function at maximum capacity. 🔋🔥🙌🏼
