Few activities develop both critical thinking and people skills at the same time. Bridge challenges you to solve problems, communicate effectively, and work as a team under pressure. Those lessons extend far beyond the card table and into school, careers, and everyday life.

One of the most fascinating things in bridge is how vulnerability changes psychology.

The exact same hand may be bid completely differently depending on the colors.

Bridge is part math…
part controlled aggression.

Last Thursday was my very first live bridge lesson.

On Friday, a couple who attended the class put what they learned into action at the game. Not once, but twice, the techniques we covered came up during play—and both boards turned into top boards for them.

The result? They won the Friday game.

Today, the president of the Marin Unit sent an email to her friends encouraging them to come to future lessons and shared this story. I honestly couldn’t ask for a better testimonial.

As a teacher, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing students immediately apply what they’ve learned and get great results.

Bridge isn’t just about memorizing conventions—it’s about learning how to think through the game and making better decisions at the table.

I’m still smiling.

📋 Your convention card is only as good as the conversations behind it.

Today at 9:00 AM Pacific / Noon Eastern, we’re diving deep into the Convention Card and all the little nuances that can make the difference between a smooth partnership and a costly misunderstanding.

We’ll discuss:
✅ Invitational bidding
✅ What your doubles really mean
✅ Competitive auctions
✅ Slam agreements
✅ Partnership understandings
✅ What belongs on your card—and what doesn’t

Because the best convention card doesn’t show what YOU play.

It shows what WE play.

Whether you’re filling out a new card, updating an old one, or simply trying to understand what all those boxes mean, this workshop will help you build clarity and confidence with your partner.

Most bridge players know the Rule of 20.

Fewer know who deserves the credit.

According to bridge author and teacher Mel Colchamiro, the original concept came from Tillie Epstein, one of his students in the early 1980s. When Mel taught beginning duplicate players, he encouraged opening hands where your HCP plus the lengths of your two longest suits reached a certain threshold. Tillie famously replied:

“That’s 20.”

The name stuck.

Over time, the Rule of 20 became one of the most popular guidelines for opening light. But Mel believed it had a flaw.

The Rule of 20 sometimes encourages us to open hands filled with Queens and Jacks while ignoring a more important question:

Can this hand actually take tricks?

That led Mel Colchamiro to create his famous Rule of 22:

✔ HCP + lengths of your two longest suits = 20 or more

PLUS

✔ At least 2 defensive tricks

Because bridge isn’t just about counting points.

It’s about counting tricks.

The Rule of 20 tells you when a hand might qualify.

Mel’s Rule of 22 helps determine whether it should.

Have you started using the Rule of 22 in your own game?

“The Hog wins by accident. I lose on principle.” — Papa the Greek, Victor Mollo's Bridge Menagerie.

The most dignified way to describe a bad result. 🎭

Imagine trying to tell your partner exactly what you hold without saying a word.

That's bridge.

A simple bid like 1♠ can communicate strength, shape, suit length, and future possibilities.

To outsiders, it's just numbers and suits.
To bridge players, it's a language.

One spoken by millions around the world.

Because bridge isn't just a card game. It's one of the most sophisticated communication systems ever built around 52 cards.

Bridge defenders communicate in complete silence.

One small card can mean:
“Yes, keep going.”

Or:
“Please switch immediately.”

The best bridge partnerships almost feel telepathic.
