“Learning” Strength and Endurance
We are all familiar with the process of building strength and endurance. We challenge the body with progressive overloads, and the body responses with what is called super-compensation: building more capacity for potential future challenges. But what if increasing strength and endurance are as much learning processes, as physiological adaptations? That's the hypotheses of both Russian strength expert Pavel Tsatsouline, and endurance scientist Professor Tim Noakes. I found this especially interesting because they work in separate fields of study and came to the conclusions separately. I hadn't put the two hypotheses together until last week while having a conversation with my teacher, Sifu Charlie Hicks, about the learning aspect of power in striking. Check out these books to learn more; fascinating stuff!
