Running with Shelter Dogs + sharing rescues stories! Proving any dog can find joy through canicross

At North American Canicross’s Race Around Red Top all dogs are welcome no matter their size, breed, or background. We happened to park next to the sweetest team in the world, Sudie and Ghost. We wished them luck in their race, and during the awards ceremony watched them claim their first place prize! Ghost loved to pull during the race and showed his true Canicross spirit. Can’t wait to see and cheer for them at the next race!

We met Anastasia and Colin at the Capitolina Racing Dryland Challenge this year, and knew the second we laid eyes on Colin that we wanted to meet him.

Anastasia is a runner who loves rescue dogs. She was running with her dogs casually for exersice until she met a friend who suggested she try a Canicross set up. Colin immediately knew what to do, and loved it so much that they now attend races together. Colin and Anastasia have bonded so much since they’ve found each other, and they are thankful to have found Canicross as an activity they can participate in as a team 💜 Can’t wait to see you at the next race Colin!

MEET PRINCESS 🌻
📍 Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters

We volunteered to run with shelter dogs last week and met Princess! She is the sweetest dog with the weirdest little howl you’ve ever heard. Her ears? Completely naked. Her personality? Shining. Taking treats? The most gentle dog we’ve ever met. This girl would love canicross in the sense of going for a light casual jog together and snuggling after. She’s got a sprint or two in her, but would much prefer to run around a 10 minute/mile+ pace. Perfect run club dog and we mean it. We saw one person while out on our run together and she was a little interested but kept on joggin 💪

We love a lot of things about North American Canicross but one thing in particular is how inclusive and fun their races are. Whether you are a competitive runner looking for a fast (like, really fast!) race, a beginner trying canicross in a race setting for the first time, somewhere in between, or joining virtually, everyone no matter your speed or ability is welcome and celebrated. It’s really just about trying your best and bonding with your dog 🫶

Their next race is in Conyers, Georgia in November. It’s a rootin tootin good time at the Steeplechase Stampede! 🤠

MEET NOVA PT. 2!
📍 Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters

Our first run with Nova over a month ago, we could barely clip our largest canicross harness around her chest, but this past week we had to tighten it quite a bit! To be honest, about half the times we go to run with Nova we find she’s already on a walk or out playing with another volunteer! She is LOVELY and everyone wants to walk her! She’s quiet, affectionate, and loves to be told she’s doing a good job (which is like, all the time!). We think she would make an awesome running bud, but would be equally happy playing in the yard and snuggling on the couch.

For more info on Nova and the adoption process please check out Furkid’s website!

We finished our Friends Of Oso Foundation Hearts for Huskies challenge with 17.8 miles with dogs at the shelter! In February we volunteered 6 times for 23 runs, and took out 13 different dogs at Furkids Atlanta.

Lucky has lived at Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters for most of his life. He is a sweet boy that looked to us for assurance, and once he felt safe he let loose like a puppy! Lucky is usually curled up fast asleep in his enclosure while we are there, even with other dogs barking. Last time we were there walking through the dog runs looking for someone to run with, we heard a howl we had never heard before…It was Lucky saying he was ready to run again!

Do you like to run the same route around your neighborhood for exercise? Lucky would love to join you, and we think he’s very open to expanding his horizons and making that route a little more exciting at a safe-for-Lucky pace! Give this sweet boy a chance at a life outside of the shelter, with a soft bed he can call his own for his naps.

*We are volunteers at Furkids and while we get to know dogs a little bit while we are out for runs with them, a Furkids adoption counselor will be able to tell you a lot more. Please reach out to them for more info! 🐕
