If you have been watching any of this years 2-6A Utah High School Basketball tournaments you have certainly got your monies worth. Thursday evening was nothing different Fremont vs. Riverton, North Vs. South. Veteran Big vs Rookie Big..... Riverton jumped out to an early commanding lead Fremont stayed poised and hard working, pulling ahead in the 4th quarter Riverton hits a 3 ball from the wing to tie it at 46. Woooo...hold the phone, with 9 seconds left Fremont brings in the ball to no other than 5’2” reserve guard Karlie Valdez who sees the court and no one really playing the ball takes it to the rack with just under 1 second left in regulation. Did we mention Karlie stands in at 5’2”. Don’t let size and determination fool you. Congrats to Karlie for being selected as this weeks female Prep Athlete of the Week.

This weeks female Utah Prep Athlete of the week ending Dec 16th is Breaunna Gillenn of
Copper Hills High School. As she and the ladies of Copper Hills traveled across the valley to play in the Corner Canyon winter Classic. Three impressive wins over American Fork, Skyline and Corner Canyon to take top honors in the tournament. Breaunna had 19,16, and 17 in the tournament. She has developed herself as a scoring threat from anywhere on the court, not to mention she is carrying a 4.0 grade average. Next up Alta tonight. Congratulations.

The Utah Prep Athlete of the week ending Dec 3rd is Corner Canyons Gabe Toombs. While the Chargers hosted their inaugural Tournament of Champions Tournament, they also took the crown. With a very strong team, yet a couple players in foul trouble, the junior Toombs came off the bench in the championship against Bountiful to put in 16 points and pick up the tournament MVP honors. Gabe and the Chargers are certainly off to a great start in 2017-18. Congratulations!

If you are a prep football fan and you didn't trek to Weber State last weekend to witness the rematch between two strong South Valley schools, Juan Diego and Summit Academy you missed one of the best games of the year if not one of the best in many years. The weather was frightful, the yellow flags flew like taffy at a community parade, but in the end of the double overtime thriller Juan Diego snuck away with the win. Solid team play but particularly the 3 touchdown, 176 yard rushing game of Hunter Easterly was the difference. Congratulations to Hunter Easterly as this weeks Male Prep Athlete of the week.
