Hereās a short, extra-silly cheat sheet for Bute, Equioxx, and Banamine.

The Holy Trinity of Horse Pain Meds
Translation: āMy horse did something dramaticā¦ again.ā
1. Bute (Phenylbutazone)
Aesthetic: Old-school cowboy, smells like a show barn in the ā90s.ļæ½Nicknames: Horse Advil, Powdered Attitude Adjuster, Farrierās Little Helper
Use for:
ā¢ Lameness, arthritis, āIām 20 but pretending Iām 4ā soreness
ā¢ Post-āI galloped on wet grass like a moronā pain
Pros:
ā¢ Cheap and works. Like duct tape, but for legs.
ā¢ Every barn has some. If they say they donāt, theyāre lying.
Cons:
ā¢ Can tick off the stomach, colon, and kidneys if you get dose-happy.
ā¢ Not a lifestyle choice. More of a ālong weekendā solution.
Absolutely not:
ā¢ No mixing with Equioxx or Banamine. This is not a cocktail bar.
ā¢ No ājust a little extraā because your horse looked a bit sore.
2. Equioxx (Firocoxib)
Aesthetic: Fancy, expensive, your horseās designer arthritis med.ļæ½Nicknames: Fancy Bute, Gucci Painkiller, Retirement Plan Drainer
Use for:
ā¢ Long-term arthritis, creaky joints, āmy horse has more years on the odometer than I do.ā
Pros:
ā¢ Easier on the gut than Bute. Great for the delicate flower types.
ā¢ Once-a-day, set-it-and-forget-it vibes.
Cons:
ā¢ Costs approximately one kidney per month. Yours, not the horseās.
ā¢ Still an NSAID, so kidneys and GI can still complain if abused.
Absolutely not:
ā¢ No teaming up with Bute or Banamine. This is not The Avengers.
ā¢ No double-dosing because āhe was extra stiff before the show.ā
Call the vet, not your chaos brain.
3. Banamine (Flunixin Meglumine)
Aesthetic: Emergency hero, mild chaos energy.ļæ½Nicknames: Colic Juice, Vetās Best Friend, The Panic Paste
Use for:
ā¢ Colic pain, gut drama, āheās looking at his belly and youāre spiraling.ā
ā¢ Some eye pain, fever, general internal āsomethingās on fire.ā
Pros:
ā¢ Amazing for colic pain and inflammation. Buys time while you call the vet and ugly-cry.
ā¢ Can turn a dying-swan performance into āok Iāll nibble some hay.ā
Cons:
ā¢ Can make a colic horse look better than they actually are. Fake it till you crash.
ā¢ IM injections? Hard no. Thatās how you summon abscess horror stories.
Absolutely not:
ā¢ Do not use Banamine as your āletās see what happensā instead of calling the vet.
ā¢ Do not combine with Bute or Equioxx to create Super Colic

Lightning Round: Whoās Who
ā¢ Bute: āMy feet hurt, my joints hurt, everything hurtsā ā short-term, musculoskeletal drama.
ā¢ Equioxx: āIām old, arthritic, and still think Iām a barrel horseā ā long-term joint management.
ā¢ Banamine: āMy stomach hates meā ā colic, internal pain, fever, emergency vibes.

Print these. Tattoo them on your brain. Maybe your tack trunk.
