Balance is not something we find. Balance is something we create. Push and pull. Ebb and flow. Creating balance makes us grow. Balancing on tiptoes with eyes wide open because in case you were wondering it ain’t easy (at least not for this girl).

Taking it to the wall for a gentle fold. Activating some deep 360 diaphragmatic breathing to make space in the low back as I welcome some deep stretching in the hamstrings.
(Jan 15-22)

Backbends! What can I say? I have definitely learned patience and humility from the practice of backbends. I personally do not have a lot of mobility in my spine. That is my anatomical makeup and that’s ok. So here I am practicing embodied scapula humeral function. I am getting a nice stretch in the thoracic spine while the scapula engage in upward rotation.

Accessing ease through mindfulness. Practicing embodiment with functional breath allows me to have safer entry into this fold. Engaging the abdominal wall allows for support of the spine and less strain on the hamstring.

Splits practice at the wall for that extra support. Bringing attention and awareness to activation of the abdominal wall and external rotation of the back leg allows for protection on the front hamstring.
I find it fascinating how human anatomy is different for every human being. Left legged splits are my friend, right not so much and touch down in middle splits well that’s dreaming.
I have learned that non attachment in yoga is such a large part of mindfulness practice and wouldn’t you know it makes me so much more thankful for this wonderful body I am in.
How about you, how do you practice mindfulness?

Do you have tight hip flexors? Often times throughout our daily routines our hip flexors get tight and as a result we experience pain in the low back.
One of my love/hate warm ups is low lunges at the wall. My hip flexors may not love it but my low back always does.

“I don’t have a feeling of inferiority. Never had. I’m as good as anybody but no better.”
Katherine Johnson
While there are many women that have made their mark in the field of technology the one that stands out to me the most is Katherine Johnson. She was one of the first African American women to work as a NASA scientist. Known for her calculation trajectories for NASA missions she was nicknamed the “human computer”. Amongst other pursuits she worked on plans for a mission to Mars. She was later awarded the Medal of Freedom from President Obama.
To me she represents strength, honor, ingenuity, perseverance and aspiration. Just a few of the stepping stones that leads to greatness.
