Did you know that roller derby bouts would not exist without a dedicated crew of skating and non-skating officials?! We are so deeply grateful and proud of this group for their hard work, bravery (have you ever ref'd a sports event before? Terrifying), and their immeasurable commitment to the game we all love.

Without their support, this game would not have been possible. The Betties ❤️ Derby Justice League!

In case you missed it (but honestly, how could you?)--we hosted our first home game of the season on Saturday to celebrate Pride Month! Huge thanks to Angel City Derby's Road Ragers for bringing the good vibes and hard hits as our opponents for the evening!

We are so grateful to all of our sponsors, vendors, volunteers, officials, coaches, visiting skaters, fans, and everyone who made Saturday night possible--the good time would not have been so sweet without y'all. Home bout production is always a massive effort and we are forever in awe of our community for making it happen--and having fun while doing it!

Congratulations to our skaters who have been working so diligently to pull off this nail-biter of a win! Angel City did not make it easy and we look forward to a rematch someday soon.

'Til then!
XOXO - The Fun Team

VENDOR & RESOURCE TABLE ALERT!! Swipe to get your first glance at who will be tabling at our home bout today!

Twisted Sewing with Love creates beautiful bespoke items with enough personality to knock any jammer off the track! We absolutely adore their box bags as skate tool bags and their custom headbands to keep us looking good even after wearing a helmet all day.

All for Love Animal Rescue is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit group dedicated to saving dogs from shelters in Southern California. If you get to the bout early, you might just get to meet some adorable adoptable dogs!

Paul’s Puzzles of Loubud Wines creates mesmerizing hand-cut wooden puzzles! Word on the street is that Paul created a custom roller skate puzzle just for tonight! You won’t want to miss it.

Xanadu Skate Boutique is Santa Barbara’s only roller skate shop made by skaters for skaters! Check out their table to pick up some replacement skate parts, deck out your skates with cute laces or toe caps, and learn more about how to get involved with our broader skate community!

ZAMPKAMP—the pretty boy industrial rock project from Zackary Cramp—is not only performing during our halftime show, but will also have plenty of merch for us fans to stock up on!

SBTA is our community’s teachers union fighting for safe and sustainable working conditions in our local schools! Be sure to drop by their table to learn about more ways to support their goals of attracting and retaining quality teachers for our kids.

Check out all of these vendors and resource tables TONIGHT! See you there!

The Brawlin' Betties stand in solidarity with the Santa Barbara Teachers Association. Santa Barbara teachers are the lowest paid teachers as compared to the cost of living in California. Other less resourced communities manage to value their teachers more than SBUSD. Over the past 2 years, SBUSD has lost 200 teachers to neighboring communities who pay their workers a better wage, offer better healthcare, and support student centered proposals from their teachers’ unions. If you want to support educators in Santa Barbara so that they can stay living in SB, find several ways to get involved via SBTA's Community Toolkit: https://conta.cc/3Vxpxmb

We are honored to have members of the SBTA blow the first whistle at our upcoming home bout -- this Saturday, June 8th! They will also have a resource and information table set up to share more details about their purpose.

But you don't have to wait until Saturday to connect with SBTA and take action to improve the working conditions of our community's teachers! Here are actions you can take TODAY to support the teachers union (all referenced resources are linked in the SBTA Community Toolkit, linked above!):

1. Familiarize yourself with SBTA's 21-Point Platform
2. Sign the Open Letter in Support of SBTA Salary Proposal
3. Pledge Your Support in the Event a Strike becomes Necessary
4. Sign the Community Petition to support Santa Barbara Teachers
5. Display a "WE SUPPORT SB TEACHERS" sign in your local business (email [email protected] to get yours today!)
6. Attend, and speak, at a school board meeting in person or on zoom (next board meeting is June 11)

SBTA is focused on improving teacher working conditions in order to provide students with the best learning environment possible. Teacher working conditions are student learning conditions! Let's work together to attract and retain qualified teachers for our community.

Nothing gets us more pumped up to smack down than ZAMPKAMP's pretty-boy industrial beats! And guess what? The multi-instrumentalist producer behind ZAMPKAMP's loud, frenzied, and explosive project--Zackary Cramp--will be performing during halftime at our upcoming Pride Home Bout! Come for the derby, stay for the tunes 😎

Our captains planned an amazing team bonding weekend for our league at Lake Cachuma 💖💖 Nature, hammocks, games, s’mores, and derby pals—it doesn’t get any better than that!

The Brawlin’ Betties unequivocally call for:

- an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza;
- the right of return for all Palestinians;
- the divestment of US funds, weapons, and support for genocide;
- and the removal of all illegal Israeli settlements and IOF military operations in the West Bank, Gaza, and all of the illegally occupied Palestinian lands.

To our fellow roller derby leagues: it’s beyond time to stand in solidarity with our Palestinian kin. Join us in our call to free Palestine!

Visit linktr.ee/brawlinbetties to donate to PCRF, UNRWA, Palestinian families via Operation Olive Branch, and the UCSB Gaza Solidarity Encampment.

If you’re local to our area: join, support, and uplift the demands of students, faculty, staff, and community members in their call on UCSB to divest from genocide. If you’re following us from afar, support your local student movement to pressure universities to do the same.

Follow , , and on Instagram for more ways to locally and globally bring forth the end of this genocide.

Black History Month is coming to an end, but we’re here to remind you that the history of rollerskating IS Black history.

- 1930s-1950s: The first campaigns to desegregate roller rinks began. Black activists used picket lines, boycotts, law suits, and stand ins (using their bodies to block the entrances) to target segregated rinks.
- 1957: Bill Butler (the “Godfather of Roller Disco”) brought the dance skating moves he learned in Detroit to New York City. He pushed roller rinks to hire DJs and play R&B, jazz, funk, and eventually disco music.
- 1958: Darlene Anderson became the first Black woman to play professional roller derby at a time when few Black athletes in any sport were allowed to compete alongside white athletes.
- 1962: Black teenagers in Illinois began a series of sit-ins at their local roller rink to protest segregation, garnering national attention. They succeeded and the roller rink was desegregated.
- 1963: Ledger Smith skated 685 miles from Chicago to Washington, D.C. to attend Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. He wore a sign that said “I’m skating to Washington for Civil Rights.”
- 1970s: Roller disco was widely popular. Bill Butler trained generations of skaters in NYC and worked as the skating director on films like Xanadu. Black skate communities across the US developed their own distinct skating styles.
- 1980s: When more established music venues refused to book Black artists, early hip hop artists and rappers like N.W.A. performed at roller rinks instead.
- 1990s-present: Roller rinks continue to be important gathering places and outlets of self-expression for Black communities, even as many rinks close due to lack of profitability.
- 2019: Ganesa Ferguson, Samantha Mack Lopez, and Marquishia Winters began building Black Diaspora Roller Derby, a roller derby team and community for Black skaters. Their goal is to create a safe and empowering space for Black skaters, provide more opportunities for Black skaters to compete at high levels, and increase representation in our sport.
- 2024: Black Diaspora Roller Derby won the Y’Allstars Southern Skate Showdown for the second year in a row 🏆
