“Everybody loved Marion!” Emily Chorba, our club historian, shares a story of talking to Louis Butler, the son of Vince Butler, who was Marion’s attorney before he died in a plane crash in the 1930’s. As Chorba explains, and as Louis shared, it was Hollins who watched over Vince’s widow and their kids. Hollins built the course, community and a lasting legacy. 🙏

Bobby Jones, Marion Hollins and Peter Hay, who, according to pebblebeach.com, “had a passion for introducing the game to newcomers, particularly juniors. In 1957, he advanced his passion by developing one of the first short courses in the U.S. Hay worked with Jack Neville and General Robert McClure to design the course just across the street from Pebble Beach Golf Links.”

(The Hay has since been redone by Tiger Woods.)

After a two-year stint as Head Pro at Poppy Hills (‘02-‘04) he came home and has been running the show now for 22 years. As Lahinch Golf Club in Ireland hosts the Walker Cup, we share a short story on Alister MacKenzie’s role in the course’s history and architecture, courtesy of mackenziesociety.org.

Keep in mind, Marion Hollins decides to build Pasatiempo in Jan., 1928. The timing of MacKenzie coming back to the States to build Cypress Point and Pasatiempo, both opening in 1929, was impeccable. So was the work they all did together.
