‼️Firearm Safety: Protecting Kids and Teens‼️
(Ask us about the “Eddie Eagle” program.)
🔹Fi****ms are one of leading cause of injury and death for children and adolescents. The hard truth? Most of these tragedies are preventable with a little common sense and responsibility.
➡️ Why It Matters
• Guns are the second leading cause of death in kids and teens (right behind car accidents).
• Most shootings involving youth happen with guns found at home or a friend’s house.
• A child doesn’t need training to pull a trigger—just access.
➡️ Best Practices for Firearm Safety Around Kids
1. Lock It Up.
• Use a gun safe, lock box, or trigger lock.
• Don’t rely on “they know not to touch it.” Kids are curious.
2. Talk About It.
• Pretending guns don’t exist doesn’t work.
• Teach your kids: if they see a gun, don’t touch it—leave and tell an adult.
3. Teach Them.
• Teach them about gun safety and safe gun handling (age dependent!
• Teach your kids: if they see a gun, don’t touch it—leave and tell an adult
4. Model Safe Behavior.
• Don’t leave fi****ms unsecured, even “just for a minute.”
• Handle guns responsibly in front of your children; they’ll copy you.
5. Check Other Homes.
• Before your kid goes for a playdate, ask: “Do you have fi****ms in the house, and are they secured?”
6. Do NOT make them “taboo” or mysterious.
• Think about when your parents told you not to drink or smoke ci******es. What did a lot of us do? We ran out to sneak a beer or choke down a cigarette only because we were told not to.
• If you make them a “normal” part of your household by showing them to them, talking to them about their purpose in the house and the danger that can be associated with them if not respected and treated safely and appropriately then they lose some of the allure. Basically making them “no big deal” in the sense that they don’t think of ways to get them and mess with them when they no rhetorical shouldn’t. You can even tell them that if they have questions or want to see them that all they need to do is ask and you will show them and tell them all about them.
➡️Bottom Line
Fi****ms can be part of your home and lifestyle—but safety isn’t optional. Lock them up, talk to your kids, and teach them. A little responsibility goes a long way in preventing tragedies.
📌 Feel Free to reach out for information on the “Eddie Eagle” program, the educational program that we use that teaches gun safety to children of all ages with age appropriate materials (books, cartoon videos, etc.) and we teache parents how to talk to their children about gun safety.)
