Sunday Morning Keiko A community - celebrating the Budo journey! A different kind of association - celebrating the Karate Journey! Welcome to the journey!

SMK is a non-exclusive karate community, advancing a spiritual as well as physical approach to the study of karate. Unlike a traditional organization, we do not issue rank or accreditation, but rather offer resources via various forms of media (in the members section of this site), along with seasonal training retreats designed to provide the individual with materials to construct and augment their individual karate practice. It is our desire to create an environment that gives room to the independent journey, and a community that collectively and respectfully celebrates the process of becoming a martial artist. "Although the doorway is narrow, go deeply inward."
-Gichin Funakoshi

Day 1 of the 2026 California Fall Keiko at Petaluma Karate Club. This month marks Rick Hotton Sensei’s 50th year teaching karate. Those present with us this time represent nearly the entire span of those years — students who trained with him near the beginning of his first dojo, current in-person and online students, folks who attend almost every CA seminar, and some brand new to training with him. It’s an honor to share the dojo floor with you all.

We have deep gratitude to Karen MacDonald Sensei for hosting us once again in her beautiful dojo, during her 10th anniversary in this location. This place embodies the best of what karate can bring to people’s life experience. We should all treasure and support these spaces where people can learn the best of lessons about themselves and find their own path of navigating life with deeper connection to the moment.

Marking Hotton Sensei’s 50th hear teaching karate, this event is an opportunity to experience the distillation of his decades of experience that integrates a range of philosophies and traditions along the path to help students find their own karate. See you there!
