"Coming Clean to Santa"
By Andrea Nolte

Dear Santa-
Well, it’s almost that time of year again. It won’t be long before I am wrapping presents, baking cookies, eating goodies, attending parties and skipping my workouts. Now I know I shouldn’t tell you that I will skip my workouts during the holiday season but I want to be truthful….no lumps of coal in my stocking, please.
Every year around this time I promise myself that I will not over indulge and gain those dreaded 5-7 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. I make it clear to myself that I won’t start the New Year off with more resolutions about weight loss and fitness. How do I find myself in this situation every year?
Ok, to be REALLY honest about everything it’s because I set myself up to fail. How? It’s very simple:
-I go shopping at the mall and give in to bad foods. I should know better that I will get tempted to munch so a healthy snack like almonds, seeds, fruit, or a protein bar stashed in my purse would have saved me.
-I bake cookies and let’s just say I sample EVERYTHING. I taste the dough. I nibble on half of a cookie then I finish the other half 2 minutes later. I get a huge glass of milk…just in case any dunking needs to be done. What I should do is wait for the finished product and then choose 1 or 2 cookies and then move along. Portion control is so important when it comes to sweets.
-I go to holiday gatherings and basically hover around the buffet table. Instead of putting a few items on a small plate then walking away, I guard the table like a German Shepherd. I should know by now that party foods are my weakness. I should go for the healthier items first, limiting the naughty ones.
-I have been known to have a little too much holiday cheer. Nothing makes me smile like a good eggnog adult beverage. Drinking these is such a mistake with a whopping 343 calories, 21 grams of sugar and 19 grams of fat!! I should stick with lighter spirits and really set a limit. I know that drinking water will help so I need to remind myself often.
-I somehow put my workouts to low priority. I get SO busy that I decide to not take a walk, go for a swim or lift weights. I do find time to watch television, read magazines, and check my page. Scheduling time each day for a 30 minute workout would help me stay focused during this crazy time of year.
Santa, I feel better confessing my struggles and how I plan to help myself. Sometimes the best of intentions are pushed to the side with all of the chaos. I need to plan ahead for my meals, schedule my workouts, and keep focus on my long-term goals. I will keep realistic expectations so I don’t feel defeated when I do stumble.
Happy Holidays, Andrea
P.S.- Veggies and fruit will be waiting for you when you visit my house…and a few cookies
