New belts tested, from IBJJF Boston to Montreal. Professor Harrison Hatton, and juvenile blue Makaela Fox, both had solid first showings two weeks ago in Boston. Kicking things off with Professor Harrison, going the distance, falling short by only a few points against the #2 seed. Makaela, following a first round bye, was put right into the fire against 2026 Euro medalist Neve Marshall. Despite fighting hard, losing the match by submission. Earning bronze, Makaela signed up for the open class. Including not just Neve, but Clara Huon the top ranked competitor, and a 2026 IBJJF Pan American champion. Up first, a rematch with Neve Marshall, after giving up points early, Makaela was determined to see the match through. Scoring a sweep late in the match, coming very close to evening the score, before time ran out. Her final match being against Clara, who had submitted everyone she faced, including Neve . After defending multiple attacks, she too, eventually meeting the same fate, receiving another bronze, and plenty of lessons along the way. One week later, Professor James Bruchac and Harrison traveled to Montreal. On that day Professor Hatton secured his first win (16-4), and medals at black, eventually earning double bronze for the day. Despite going matchless, receiving uncontested gold, it was well worth the trip for Professor Bruchac, being able to coach one his black belts to victory. Next up, the New Jersey International Open in June.
